La genesi lunga di questa lirica la rende “anomala” rispetto agli altri Grandi Idilli, poiché è sì strutturata sui canoni di queste composizioni, ma l’idea del passero viene a Leopardi in età giovanile (tra il 1819 ed il 1820), annotata nelle pagine dello Zibaldone. Tuttavia la composizione deve essere posteriore rispetto a quella dei grandi idilli, dato che il canto non compare ancora nell’edizione fiorentina del 1831, bensì in quella napoletana del 1835.
