Publisher's summary

A glorious and tantalizing new escape from #1 New York Times bestselling author Carley Fortune.

This summer they’ll keep their promise. This summer they won't give into temptation. This summer will be different.

Lucy is the tourist vacationing at a beach house on Prince Edward Island. Felix is the local who shows her a very good time. The only problem: Lucy doesn’t know he’s her best friend’s younger brother. Lucy and Felix’s chemistry is unreal, but the list of reasons why they need to stay away from each other is long, and they vow to never repeat that electric night again.

It’s easier said than done.

Each year, Lucy escapes to PEI for a big breath of coastal air, fresh oysters and crisp vinho verde with her best friend, Bridget. Every visit begins with a long walk on the beach, beneath soaring red cliffs and a golden sun. And every visit, Lucy promises herself she won’t wind up in Felix’s bed. Again.

If Lucy can’t help being drawn to Felix, at least she’s always kept her heart out of it.

When Bridget suddenly flees Toronto a week before her wedding, Lucy drops everything to follow her to the island. Her mission is to help Bridget through her crisis and resist the one man she’s never been able to. But Felix’s sparkling eyes and flirty quips have been replaced with something new, and Lucy’s beginning to wonder just how safe her heart truly is.

Editorial Review

A romantic summer listen with a charming setting
Carley Fortune writes a vacation romance like no other. In This Summer Will Be Different, she transports us to Prince Edward Island, the beautiful backdrop to a forbidden love story between Lucy and Felix, her best friend’s brother. AJ Bridel’s tender performance perfectly complements this heartfelt story. Alternating between present day and flashbacks to the summers the couple clandestinely spent together beneath the soaring red cliffs and golden sun of PEI, we become deeply invested not only in their sexy romance, but also the special relationship Lucy has with her friend Bridget. I listened to this story while on vacation and nearly devoured it in one sitting. I can’t recommend this one enough for your next trip to the beach, the pool, or even the grocery store, for a truly satisfying escape. — Margaret H., Audible Editor

I love a good love story

It’s been a while since I’ve fallen in love with a love story. Finally something good! I felt the connection, the build up. And I really enjoyed both their personalities. Lots of spice, lots of angst. Their relationship grew over time. Realistic and I loved every second! Wonderful narrating !!!

THIS SUMMER WASN’T DIFFERENT!!!!!

Because Carley Fortune, once again, published one of the best books of the year. I will never get enough of her or her love for Canada. She seriously makes me, a Houston, Texas, native, want to move up north to the land of Tim Horton’s.

For lovers of Happy Place, Anne of Green Gables, and whimsy✨

What a shimmering summer read. Cannot get over Fortune’s love for Canada and her storytelling. Love Lucy and Felix’s characters. Narration was top tier also. Sprinkle in a little Anne of Green Gables and I was hooked. May just restart listening.

Charming love story with a beautiful backdrop

The thing I love most about Carley Fortune’s books is the sincerity and vulnerability of the characters. This Summer Will Be Different doesn’t disappoint and tells a beautiful story against the gorgeous backdrop of PEI. Highly recommend!

Immature female characters ruin what could be a great book

Wow. The FMC demonstrates a severe lack of maturity throughout the entire book but it’s more jarring when you realize she’s almost 30 and still reacting like she’s in her early 20’s. She leaves (multiple times) then gets mad and jealous when the MMC picks up the pieces and dates other women. Um, what?

The best friend is a controlling narcissist who seems to make everything about her and also has the maturity of a pre-teen, asking friends and family to drop their ENTIRE LIVES (with no details or timeline) to come coddle her, pre-wedding. And then throws a fit when anyone confronts her about her selfishness.

If the situation was reversed and these characters were men we would be calling them toxic and emotionally abusive.

I was SO excited about this book and normally love this author, but she missed the mark. Authors like Emily Henry and Abby Jiminez have proven you can have likable, yet flawed characters who aren’t obnoxious and immature. Only Felix was worth the time of this book, sadly.
