Publisher's summary

A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.

The Orders's intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future...or the downfall of them both.

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders's deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.

Even if it means wielding death itself.

Contains mature themes.

Excellent Fantasy Romance! So excited for the next one ✨

This book tells the story of Tisaanah. After she escapes 8 years of slavery she heads to a group called The Orders in order to join them and seek help for her fellow slaves still in captivity back home. There she meets Max who becomes her reluctant teacher. Together they train as love and friendship grows between them. And as time passes, Tisaanah discovers The Orders may not be everything she wanted them to be and that war is soon to arrive.

🤍This was a surprisingly wonderful read. Tisaanah is an excellent main character. The majority of the book is from her point of view. She is strong willed(not in a bratty way like you see in many novels). She is brave, smart, and resourceful. She has to fight every step of the way to get what she wants and she never gives up.
💙Max is also great. About halfway through the book, we start hearing his point of view as well which I loved. He has a bad history with The Orders and is grumpy, snarky, and mad at the world(for good reason). Nevertheless, he sees Tisaanah’s strong will and it inspires him as even with all his tragedies he still wants to see good in the world.
❤️‍🔥The romance that develops between them was wonderful. It wasn’t build just on sexual attraction like many of these books tend to do(though this novel does have heat 🔥 in the romance department). The romance developed as they grew to trust, to learn each other, and to open up to one another. It was very well done and there wasn’t any stupid miscommunications or “protecting you for your own good” kinds of annoying interferences like there always tends to be.
💛As for the story. It was an excellent beginning to this series. The majority was training with some action battles closer to the end. We meet some good side characters but mainly stick with Max and Tisaanah. Additionally, we don’t get a lot of world building in this book but I was still enthralled the entire time and eager to see what would happen next. With war coming up, I’m interested to see how Tisaanah and Max will fight and keep control of their powers.

Overall, great read. Highly recommend for lovers of non-YA Fantasy Romance! 🖤

Better than Throne of Glass

The main character are people you are actually rooting for. They reach for goals bigger than themselves and are actually smart. It’s a well though out story but maybe a bit slow at times.

I enjoyed the romance. It wasn’t over played and was very sweet and perfectly time in the story.

The only reason I put two stars for performance was the guy who narrated it was really frustrating to listen to, and kind of destroyed the characters point of you. I liked the woman’s voice but she was also a little annoying too.

great story

I really enjoyed the storyline and loved Esther Wane's reading. I wasn't as thrilled when very late into the book Dan Calley began to narrate. I am not a huge fan of multiple naraters in books, but his was especially hard to listen to after Esther's smooth voice. Dan seemed out of breath and rushed every chapter.

Criminally underrated

There is absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. This is my favorite trilogy ever, up there tied with my favorite series ever. The characters are lovable and complex. The pacing is the best pacing of any book. The romance is sweet yet still full of tension. The plot is incredible. I cannot recommend this book enough. The narrators were perfectly cast as well. This book is criminally underrated and I will never understand how it isn’t at the top of booktok. 12/10, move this up to the top of your TBR.

where has this book been?

I'm not sure where this book has Been or why I hadn't heard about it before. It's a great book but it almost seems like it's 2 different stories book different stories in 1. Part 1 is slow and part 2 is where the action happens and it really picks up.

mediocre story, bad performance

by the time the book ended I could barely bare listening to the narrator's whining the plot. the book itself is angsty enough, but the crybaby voice the narrator keeps doing makes it even worse. the story started so promising and ended so meh. I'm so disappointed

Can’t put it down! Waiting for the next twist and turn from this storyteller!

I finally found an author that immerses me in story and characters with so much depth. What a great read following ACOTAR and TOG! I can’t wait to journey on more adventures with Tisaanah and Max!

Amazing story

The story is absolutely phenomenal. The woman narrator is great. The male narrator needs to learn how to breathe. He absolutely ruined Max. I’m really hoping the next two books he got that whole gasping under control.

AMAZING

it was amazing and the male narrator was just fine, yes he was very breathy but it didn't bother me very much and he most certainly did not ruin the book. people are way too nit picky about these things though if you genuinely can't handle a few deep breaths here and there then I guess you should just pick up a physical copy, but if you really want the audiobook then just know the male narrator doesn't really pop up that much and it's mostly the girl that's ready so hopefully that should help.

Wonderful character building

I needed to take a little break from my spicy books and this hit the spot. Loved the building up of the MC. Narrators were excellent. The male voice was a bit breathy, but I just toned it out and focused on the story. Over great book with angst and a touch of classy spice.
