Stealing from a fae lord is a desperate plan…

As a human servant at the Crimson Court, Allie knows better than to anger the fae. Cunning and politics are her tools of survival. But when an unwanted suitor threatens her younger sister, Allie can think of only one way to protect her family…

Steal from the fae.

Agenor, Lord Protector of the Fae Isles and right hand of the Mother herself, doesn’t expect anything to still surprise him after twelve centuries of life. Finding a taunting note from an anonymous thief in his wardrobe is enough to rouse his curiosity, though. Enough to do the unthinkable—write back.

Then he finds out he’s been exchanging letters with a humble human. Worse, a human challenging him to his face.

A simple bargain is supposed to teach her a lesson. But the harder he tries to put her in her place, the harder she defies him… Soon their game sparks an unexpected romance—but will even love be enough when their loyalties collide?

Heart of Silk and Shadows is a prequel novel to the Fae Isles series. It can be enjoyed as a standalone, but the characters’ journey continues in the main series.

This adult fae romance contains a generous dose of smoldering glances, passionate longing, and midnight meetings of the illicit type. It is recommended for a mature audience.

A Heartbreaking and Necessary Novella

I listened to this on audio while beginning Queens of Mist and Madness (the Fourth and Final book of this series).

The tandem was unintentional, but so perfect! Not only did my heart ache for these main characters, but the way their story is incorporated into the final book of the series was that much more impactful.

This story had so much feel and heart, and I absolutely relished the opportunity to devour the story that brought us Emelin!

This is an absolute gem and a must read for further context into the series!

Really Quite Fabulous

I unfortunately did not enjoy Book 1 in this series, but I thoroughly enjoyed this prequel. The writing is much better, the story more intricate/interesting and the narrators a better fit for the story. I might give Book 2 in the series a chance after reading this whereas had I not read it, I would not have.

Wonderful story, poor female narration

I loved the story itself, however, the recording of the female narration sometimes sounded tinny or echoey. I wouldn’t discourage the audiobook based on that alone because I was able to ignore it for the most part. The male narration was absolutely perfect. I did listen to the first 3 books before I listened to this prequel so that may have some effect on my positive opinion of this book but overall, it’s definitely worth the credit/buy.

Exciting introduction to the Fae Isles Series

I started with this prequel and I'm racing to read the first book now. In some places this book is said to be read first in the reading order, but on the author's website she says it should be read after book 2, so I hope it doesn't ruin anything for me. It can also be read as a stand-alone story, which I agree with. It definitely got me hooked and wanting more, but I don't feel like it leaves you hanging if you only read this book.

Performance- I love Tim Campbell as a narrator, so I already knew I'd enjoy his performance going into it, and he didn't disappoint! Kylee Stewart's narration was new to me, but I also enjoyed her performance and would definitely listen to her again.

I thought the character building and plot were thorough. The relationship and romance between the main characters happened early on, but keeping in mind that this is a prequel and shorter than the main novels, it seemed fitting. The chemistry felt believable, and I felt emotionally invested in the main characters from start to finish. I definitely recommend reading it!

Loved this prequel!

Is this the prequel I didn't know I needed? Yesss! It was such a fun look at Agenor and Allie! I'm glad I was able to get some back story before continuing the series. I love that they passed notes back and forth. Their story makes my heart happy. I seriously can't get enough of this series!

Side note- The female narrator was great, but the sound quality on her parts wasn't the best. Her chapters were quieter and sounded scratchy...
