Publisher's summary

It may shock you to learn that we spend an average of four to seven minutes outside each day—while we spend four to seven hours using devices with screens. Needless to say, our physical, mental, emotional, and relational health has suffered. But there is a ready solution: get outside!

A homeschooling mother of five and founder of the global 1000 Hours Outside movement, Ginny Yurich explains how we got to this point—and how to get back to a healthier, more engaging relationship with the world outside. With a mom's heart and an educator's eye, Ginny shows you: the importance of unstructured play for children; what boredom actually contributes to our brains; the value of sunlight and social play; the role of play in lifelong learning; how to make time outside more attractive to your child than screentime; and much more.

If you want your kids to grow up curious, resilient, and with a sense of adventure and community, it's essential to make outside play a priority. This book shows you why and how.

Must read if you are raising children

Life changing book! It confirmed my “gut feeling” that we are over-scheduling and managing our children too much. Well researched, this book will both encourage you and gives you peace of mind to let go a bit more.

Engaging, important book for parents!

Such an interesting read around WHY children need unstructured play and time outdoors! Lots of encouragement, humor, and data-driven explanations of children’s need to have a childhood.

Wonderfully insightful

I always knew the modern way of child rearing was lacking to say the least but the insightful story and statistics included in this book is affirming and calming. I have five small children and this could not have been more accurate. The memories and relationships with my family are more important at the end of the day than the hours I could be spending “keeping up” with everyone else. This book is a must read for all people, kids or not.

Hope and Reassurance

Okay so here's the deal, if you listen to the 1000 hours outside podcast, (if you don't, you should) this is a longer version of that. Great hope and reassurance can be found in this book. It will confirm that which you already know to be true, it's time for all of us to put down our devices and walk outside.
