Publisher's summary

It’s time to change the way we see babies.

Drawing on principles developed by the educator Dr Maria Montessori, The Montessori Baby shows how to raise your baby from birth to age one with love, respect, insight, and a surprising sense of calm. Cowritten by Simone Davies, author of the bestselling The Montessori Toddler, and Junnifa Uzodike, it’s a book filled with hundreds of practical ideas for understanding what is actually happening with your baby, and how you can mindfully assist in their learning and development. Including how to:

  • Prepare yourself for parenthood—physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.
  • Become an active observer to understand what your baby is really telling you.
  • Create Montessori spaces in your home, including “yes” spaces where nothing is off-limits.
  • Set up activities that encourage baby’s movement and language development at their own pace
  • Raise a secure baby who’s ready to explore the world with confidence.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

Critic reviews

"The guide is thoughtfully and beautifully laid out: block text, bulleted lists, and simple line illustrations accent the many anecdotes about babies and their living spaces from around the world. For parents interested in Montessori concepts of child development, this will be an invaluable resource.”—Publisher's Weekly Starred Review

“A book that advocates a simple environment with less stuff, less fuss, and a slower speed of life.”—Library Journal

Listen to this book while pregnant

You should listen to this book before the baby arrived! Lots of detail instructions and tons of informations which will be too difficult to comprehend if you’re listening to the book while trying to breast feed or changing diaper.

Great Content & Structure

The information is great and along with answering the 'what' , the often neglected, 'why' and 'what if' questions are answered also.

Good, but only if you’ve had a perfect pregnancy/birth

My only issue with this book that I can’t seem to let go of as a new mother, is that my pregnancy and birth, as well as postpartum experience was less than ideal from the Montessori perspective. It has left me with a sense that I have caused developmental harm to my baby, even though logically I know none of what happened to me was my fault. If you’re a new mother or parent and the conditions of pregnancy/birth/postpartum are not perfect, that’s ok. Life happens and we adapt, and so do our babies. I wish this book made room for this, but it leaves me feeling like I lack the perfection they seem to promote. Our culture as a whole does NOT support new mothers and parents through the child bearing portal. The world they’re describing to me sounds like it exists on another planet, or to that of a highly privileged person.

Beyond that, it does provide good ideas for supporting the development of your baby.

Great book, easy to follow with great examples

Loved everything about this book except that it’s doesn’t have an accompanying PDF. There are many reference made to charts and images but in audible we cannot see anything.

Kind & Inspiring to New Parents

The narrator is soothing and reassuring like a good mother. I learned a kinder, simple and intelligent way to parent. Best of all my husband found the Montessori Methods to be logical as well. We will do our best in 7 months to encourage exploration and safe choices for a growing young mind in a busy world.

Great resource

Fair warning it can be repetitive, however it is written so you can easily go back a reference the age period you are currently working through with your child. Eye opening.
