In the wake of WWII, a grieving fisherman submits a poem to a local newspaper: a rallying cry for hope, purpose...and rocks. When the poem spreads farther than he ever intended, Robert Bliss's humble words change the tide of a nation. Dear Reader, My name is Penelope, and while I may not be a real-life princess, I’ve been told I possess a certain fairy-tale heroine quality. I wield optimism as my weapon of choice, don amazing shoes and vintage hats whenever possible, and speak in musical references. All of which perfectly qualifies me to succeed in my new role as a marketing intern at the historic Darling House theater on the island of Skymar. Only . . . it seems this internship position is going to be a LOT bigger than I thought.

Publisher's summary
Private Matthew Petticrew arrives in France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces, an arrival that a war-weary France desperately hopes will help to end the turmoil. Having faced unthinkable things on the front, he is captivated by the sound of a lullaby, sung by a voice so pure he knows he must have imagined it. But rumors sweep through the trenches like wildfire, dubbing the voice "The Angel of Argonne", a mysterious presence who leaves behind wreaths on unmarked graves and footprints in the war-pocked soil.
Raised wild in the depths of the Forest of Argonne, France, Mireilles finds her world rocked when war comes crashing into the idyllic home she has always known, taking much from her. When Matthew discovers Mireilles, three things are clear: She is alone in the world, she cannot stay, and he and his two unlikely companions might be the only ones who can get her to safety.

Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. On October 28, 1940, Mussolini provides Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas with an ultimatum - either allow Axis forces to occupy their country or face war - and Greece’s response is swift: “Oxi!” they say. “No!” In a small village nestled against the radiant waters of the Aegean Sea, Alexei, the son of a local fisherman, and his best friend Costa - who were both born on the same night eighteen years earlier and have been like brothers ever since - leave their homes, like all the other young men in their village and throughout Greece, to bravely fight for their country.

Captivating! Amazing depth-story, writing, character, performance!
This book was my first Amanda Dykes experience and it was absolutely brilliant! The writing is superb, the story and characters draw you in, and the performance, though, slightly less than spectacular, had you right there in the trenches, walking through the Argonne, stumbling trough the ruins, seeing it all unfold right before your very own eyes… The only reason I took 1 star away was that Mira should have been portrayed with a French accent throughout the entire reading rather than a handful of times.

voices outstanding, writing was beautiful
This was one of the best audible books I have ever listened to. The voices were amazing! they were done perfectly for each character. I especially liked Jasper Truitt.
As far as the story itself, I find that Amanda Dykes writes with the beauty of a poet. Not only that , but there is a depth to each character that grows as the story progresses. Even the frivolous ones become people of character.
This is not a plot driven book, but rather one of beauty and depth. I have read her other 2 books and loved them as well, but this one was her best.
