It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Publisher's summary
This was Rome, a city of bloodshed and laughter, of food and starvation. But why was so much wealth, time and trouble lavished on free entertainments?
The Age of the Gladiators explores many savage spectacles of Ancient Rome, many of which have become proverbial for their cruelty, bloodlust and glory. From Gladiator fights in grand amphitheaters to chariot racing at the Circus Maximus, Romans had their pick of extreme spectator sports.
Rupert Matthews explores the development of these customs, from religious rites into opportunities to bolster political esteem. Were Romans truly free citizens, governed by a fair democracy? And if not, what part did these free entertainments play in the political chess game? This fascinating book reveals all.

How did the Wendels, one of New York’s most famous Gilded Age families, disappear from history? The Wendels built a fortune from New York real estate, and rubbed shoulders with the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Stuyvesants. But as the 19th century came to an end, the Wendel family tore itself apart. Books about the origins of humanity dominate bestseller lists, while national newspapers present breathless accounts of new archaeological findings and speculate about what those findings tell us about our earliest ancestors. We are obsessed with prehistory—and, in this respect, our current era is no different from any other in the last three hundred years. In this coruscating work, acclaimed historian Stefanos Geroulanos demonstrates how claims about the earliest humans not only shaped Western intellectual culture, but gave rise to our modern world.

Story
Since we first set sail on the open sea, ships and their wrecks have been an inevitable part of human history. Archaeologists have made spectacular discoveries excavating these sunken ships, their protective underwater cocoon keeping evidence of past civilizations preserved. World renowned maritime archeologist David Gibbins ties together the stories of some of the most significant shipwrecks in time to form a single overarching narrative of world history.

Story
Books about the origins of humanity dominate bestseller lists, while national newspapers present breathless accounts of new archaeological findings and speculate about what those findings tell us about our earliest ancestors. We are obsessed with prehistory—and, in this respect, our current era is no different from any other in the last three hundred years. In this coruscating work, acclaimed historian Stefanos Geroulanos demonstrates how claims about the earliest humans not only shaped Western intellectual culture, but gave rise to our modern world.

Well written history with engaging narrator
Loved the detail on gladiators that I hadn't read anywhere else. Narration was excellent and added to the ease of listening.

Good Overview of Roman History
It’s a good book. It’s a bit sporadic in its presentation but I can’t say I didn’t learn interesting intricacies here and there of one of the most powerful forces in the western world there ever existed. Didn’t care for the narration, however.

Interesting Ancient Roman Side Stories
Quick background: I have a medium knowledge of ancient Roman history, but not an expert. This book has a nice balance of history and info on gladiators, Circus Maximus (horse racing), Roman triumphs (parades), and the bread dole. Learned more about each but especially on the triumphs and bread dole on which I really didn't know anything other than they existed. The book is also a nice length - not overwhelming me with too many detail, but giving me enough on each topic.
