Publisher's summary

Modesitt continues his best-selling Saga of Recluce with his 22nd book in the long-running series. Fairhaven Rising is the first book in a new character arc and follows The Mage-Fire War.

Sixteen years have passed since the mage Beltur helped to found the town of Fairhaven, and Taelya, Beltur's adopted niece, is now a white mage undercaptain in the Road Guards of Fairhaven.

Fairhaven's success under the Council has become an impediment to the ambition of several rulers, and the mages protecting the town are seen as a threat.

Taelya, a young and untried mage, will find herself at the heart of a conspiracy to destroy her home and the people she loves, and she may not be powerful enough to stop it in time.

Review

Overall I enjoyed this audiobook. If you enjoy the other audiobooks then you’ll definitely enjoy this one. It gives you the prospective from a female chaos mage. Which is pretty interesting because many of the main characters are usually male in this particular series. Would definitely recommend you add it to your collection👍👍

Another excellent book in the Recluce series

I have all 22 books in the Recluse series and I love them. They are all narrated by Kirby Heyborne and I have listened to them several times. This series and the Imager series are like comfort food. I love the fact that each of these books build on its predecessor, but each ends at the end of a segment. Modesitt doesn't leave his readers hanging on a string, but he leaves you wanting more. These series are perfect and Kirby Heyborne brings them to life.

the Recluse formula with female mc

If you are still on board this deep in the series you do not need a review, you are familiar with the style/formula Modesitt writes and this is that but unlike most in this series the MC is a Woman. This is not uncommon for Modesitt's other works so it is more surprising that his series so focused on balance does not have more female MCs

Ok I'm ready for the next one

Loved this book as much as all the ones before it. This series has imo matched The Wheel of Time as my favorite series of all time.

A wonderful continuation of the tales of Candor.

I’ve been a long time fan of these stories and had read or listened to all so having a new one which was also very well performed by Mr. Heyborne was a great treat. I hope everyone takes the opportunity to enjoy this book.

Terrific story lots of action

Really enjoyed story to see out people have grown up and of course lots of action as are most of his books. Wish he would write another to see where they go next.

Long Time Fan Here - Since Book 1

The books have always had a consistent thread about them. Unrealistically compassionate male heroes and overly evil male baddies and strong females who get a pass on bad behavior... I've been liking the books less and less since the Grey Mages were first explained and used. At this point, I'm done though. Can't listen to any more Implicit Bias where someone is stronger because they are a woman or any of the other stereotypical stuff in these novels. People are people and vary based on their individual merits. This stuff is just intolerable to me at this point. No more for me thank you.

Boring

Alright, the author is just phoning it in now. To fill out the pages characters are constantly going off into WHAT IF land. What if the hundreds i just killed weren’t so bad, what if i did this instead of that. I love the previous books, and have listened to all the sets several times, but i am done! Check out the Unsouled by Will Wight!

Okay book, below expectations.

This is an interesting era of the world's history, and so I expected an interesting book, but Mr Modesitte managed to tell a story neither about an interesting series of events, nor an interesting character development. I think it was written without passion. After this, the author has focused on a new series. I think that's wise. This is totally readable and listenable, but it lacks the life and growth normally packed thoughtfully into his work. A swing and a miss. If this is all the passion he has left (and I don't blame anyone after 22 books!) then he should leave it alone. Maybe he will come back and hit one out of the park, but I think nothing is better than this level of work.

Thank you, Modessitte, and Heyborne, for the many, many years of stories I've been able to enjoy from you. I picked up Magic of Recluce when I was 13 years old, and I'm 40 now. Recluce has been with me for so long. Thank you.
