I find the Byzantine Empire fascinating. It is a subject about which few North Americans or western Europeans know. Yet this empire existed for a thousand years and played a pivotal role in European and western Asian history for most of that millenium. It had a great impact on the Islamic world, Russia and eastern Europe, as well as Renaissance Italy. It was a mighty nation that was frequently under attack: from Persians, Arabs, or Turks in the east; Normans, Venetians, Genoese, or French in the west; Bulgars or Russians in the north. It experienced a glorious rebirth while western Europe crawled out of the Dark Ages. The Byzantine culture was a unique fusion of ancient Greece, ancient Rome, and Christianity. Their emperor was God's ruler on earth. In Emperor's Eyes, I give the reader a brief snapshot of this magnificent civilization. Read through the dreamy narrative and imagine yourself walking through the colorful streets of Constantinople, marching with the emperor's army through Anatolia, living in the luxury of the imperial palaces, and sailing the azure blue Mediterranean Sea.
