Publisher's summary

Raised on her father's South Carolina plantation, Callie Parker wanted for nothing, and now she is about to marry wealthy local scion Wyn Archer. But her wedding wouldn't be complete without the three people she grew up with under the sheltering branches of the angel oaks at Parker Manor. There's Bode Jessup, part brother and part idol, who has become a wildly attractive man. Next is Brie Canfield, Callie's freckle-faced playmate, now an FBI agent with a life of her own. Last is shy waif Sela Bronson, whose only reason for returning to Parker Manor is to escape an unhappy marriage. As Callie's childhood companions gather to relive the charmed years they spent together, they discover how little they know of their beloved yesterday...and how one woman's darkest secret can tear them apart.

Language

I was disappointed in this one. I love Fern Michaels books but this one had too much offensive verbiage.

Family does not Always mean the same blood

The story is about a family thrown together in very unusual circumstances and how one very loving person tried to make their lives as normal as she could. Did she always make the best decisions? I guess that's up to the listener to decide. I very much enjoyed this story.

Great story

It took me a while to get into the story but as the story progressed it hooked me and I liked how it ended.

Disappointed

The story took a weird turn near the end and seemed like a pretentious attempt at addressing racism. It felt completely disconnected from the beginning of the story.

Very interesting book. I did not want it to end, yet I wanted to know the end.

Not as bad or as good as other reviews state

I felt the storyline was interesting. I, too, felt the sex scene was more explicit than it should have been for the rest of the book. I felt most of the dialogue was pretty realistic. People who are psychologically close are usually pretty down to earth in their communication. The way the deaths of the family were handled was not realistic. Eighteen months for three deaths and lying to the police, the hospital and the insurance companies is so unrealistic and we were not given a minute of that outcome. Just a mediocre book that could have, should have, been better.

loved it

This was a not put me down read. Loved the storyline. Some words could have been offensive to some I guess. They were pertinent to the feel of the story. And it's about the past and how far we have come or not.

Excellent!

I have been an Audible listener for many years. This was a free listen, so I didn’t expect much. This was one of my favorites.
The character development and the story line kept me engaged through to the end. Fern Michaels paints a descriptive picture that makes you feel as if you are right there, experiencing every moment.
Great narration that flowed naturally between the main characters. Can’t say enough about this book.
