CHAPTER THREE

Exploring the Possibilities

As Coco grew into a little cat, she dreamed more and more of climbing trees - jumping from the grass to the bottom limb, stretching her legs, springing, flying, and scrambling up dry, gnarly bark. She saw cats jumping up into trees on TV, and somehow, deep inside her, she just knew how it felt, remembered it in her very bones, the freedom, the thrill. She loved to sit by the living room window, gazing down from the ninth floor at the tops of the trees below. She knew someday she’d get down there, but in the meantime she needed to practice. She had been climbing up on the coffee table, the dining room table (when Mama wasn’t home), and the couch, practicing jumping off - she was getting really good, but she longed to climb, really climb.

One day, after Mama left for work, Coco sauntered into the kitchen, the tile cool on her paws, sat back on her haunches, and scanned the room. She was tired of looking up. She needed a new perspective....
