Story
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

He fought for the North in the late unpleasantness, and wore a badge in the name of the law. But the man John knows as A. J. But when the westward strike drove him across the Arkansas Territory into Texas, he finally found himself a home — in the middle of a bloody war. Texans like Jim Bowie and Sam Houston were waging a fierce struggle against Santa Ana’s Mexican army and Jami MacCallister made the perfect scout for the fledgling volunteer force.

Story
For 24 winters, the blond child had been held captive by the Indians. Now rangy, raw-boned Ben Allison set out to heat up a stone-cold trail and bring Amy Johnston home. He was armed with only an old mountain man's map, a cheap gold locket, an ornery pack mule, and his army Colt. It was an impossible mission leading straight into hostile Indian country. Ben was keenly aware that the search for Amy could very well be his own death hunt.

Story
In 1861, young Mark Twain found himself adrift as a tenderfoot in the Wild West. Roughing It is a hilarious record of his travels over a six-year period that comes to life with his inimitable mixture of reporting, social satire, and rollicking tall tales. Twain reflects on his scuffling years mining silver in Nevada, working at a Virginia City newspaper, being downandout in San Francisco, reporting for a newspaper from Hawaii, and more.

Wallace picked up the name "Big-Foot" while in a Mexican prison, because the prison attendants couldn’t find a boot large enough to fit him. Not only was he large of foot but also of deeds. Big-Foot Wallace was an Indian-fighter, hunter, and Texas Ranger. Few men have witnessed as many stirring incidents, had more hair-breadth escapes, or gone through more of the hardships and perils of a border life than Big-Foot Wallace.

Till now, 23-year-old Simon Boudlin has evaded military duty thanks to his slight stature, youthful appearance, and utter lack of compunction about bending the truth. But following a barroom brawl in Victoria, Texas, Simon finds himself conscripted, however belatedly, into the Confederate Army. Luckily his talent with a fiddle gets him a comparatively easy position in a regimental band.

Publisher's summary
Call them adventurers, traders, trappers, prospectors, missionaries, pioneers and friendly or hostile Indians, if you will — still they were men and women. And the blood of human beings was spilled over the trail westward to raise the Stars and Stripes over Oregon. History will always tell of them. To their posterity they carry the message: Noble, and intrepid, the Oregon Pioneers. They lived and died true Americans. This novel shares their stories.
Wagons of Destiny is the saga of heroic men and women whose slogan was 'Oregon or Bust.' The setting of this novel is an amazingly beautiful country. These pioneers courageously pushed forward to make history in this magical Oregon land that challenged their hearts and minds.
The author, John Aubrey Kramien (1882-1980), was the grandson of Sebastian Brutcher, Sr., an Oregon Pioneer of 1849, who built his homestead on his 'Donation of Land' and was responsible for the naming of the town of Newberg. Oregon. John Kramien grew up in the red hills of Oregon living in a log cabin with a dirt floor for a year. From this background he gleaned the inspiration and material to write Wagons of Destiny and his earlier book, The Saga of the Red Hills of Oregon (1963).

A Slow Start, But Worth the Wait.
The beginning of "Wagons of Destiny" felt a bit slow, taking some time to establish the characters and setting. However, once the story got rolling, I was hooked.
