The Work is simply four questions that, when applied to a specific problem, enable you to see what is troubling you in an entirely different light. As Katie says, "It's not the problem that causes our suffering; it's our thinking about the problem." Contrary to popular belief, trying to let go of a painful thought never works; instead, once we have done The Work, the thought lets go of us. At that point we can truly love what is, just as it is.

Renowned poet and critic Clive James presents the crowning achievement of his career: a monumental translation into English verse of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. The Divine Comedy is the precursor of modern literature, and this translation - decades in the making - gives us the entire epic as a single, coherent and compulsively listenable lyric poem. Written in the early 14th century and completed in 1321, the year of Dante’s death, The Divine Comedy is perhaps the greatest work of epic poetry ever composed.

OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK
AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
“A roadmap on the journey to truth and authenticity… [The Way of Integrity] is filled with aha moments and practical exercises that can guide us as we seek enlightenment.”–Oprah Winfrey
Bestselling author, life coach, and sociologist Martha Beck explains why “integrity”—needed now more than ever in these tumultuous times—is the key to a meaningful and joyful life
AN OPEN FIELD PUBLICATION FROM MARIA SHRIVER
As Martha Beck says in her book, “Integrity is the cure for psychological suffering. Period.”
In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, and with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.
Inspired by The Divine Comedy, Beck uses Dante’s classic hero’s journey as a framework to break down the process of attaining personal integrity into small, manageable steps. She shows how to read our internal signals that lead us towards our true path, and to recognize what we actually yearn for versus what our culture sells us.
With techniques tested on hundreds of her clients, Beck brings her expertise as a social scientist, life coach and human being to help readers to uncover what integrity looks like in their own lives. She takes us on a spiritual adventure that not only will change the direction of our lives, but also bring us to a place of genuine happiness.
Critic reviews
“Martha Beck is always full of insights. This book didn't disappoint! Beck identifies the ways culture works against integrity and touches on Dante's Inferno, includes quizzes, and rethinks suffering.” (Good Morning America)
“The Way of Integrity is about the redemptive power of discovering, speaking and living the truth about who you are.... The book vibrates with magic, intelligence, and love. It brims with humor, spirituality, fascinating science, and even Dante’s Divine Comedy. This radiant book will not only change your life, but perhaps even save it.” (Elizabeth Gilbert, number one New York Times best-selling author of Eat, Pray, Love)
"Martha Beck’s genius is that her writing is equal parts comforting and challenging. A teacher, a mother, a sage, she holds our hand as she leads us back home to ourselves.” (Glennon Doyle, number one New York Times best-selling author of Untamed)

Here, in her most beloved and acclaimed work, Pema shows that moving toward painful situations and becoming intimate with them can open up our hearts in ways we never before imagined. The need for change as we get older - an emotional pressure for one phase of our lives to transition into another - is a human phenomenon, neither male nor female. There simply comes a time in our lives - not fundamentally different from the way puberty separates childhood from adulthood - when it's time for one part of ourselves to die and for something new to be born.

Excellent book!
I like how Martha teaches us the importance of Integrity in our lives by using Dante’s poem, Divine Comedy, and by her own special experiences on how to reach enlightenment. I felt it’s truthfulness because I know by my own personal experience that by being who i truly am is the only way that brings me peace and inner joy. It’s the only way we can reflect that light to others. Also I’m happy to say that I have also have experienced similar mystical/spiritual and joyful moments as she has. People usually look at you in disbelief when you share things they can’t comprehend, but I’m sure that by following her exercises they will understand it fully.
Thank you Martha, sure love your honesty and sweet spirit. And I’m so sorry you weren’t protected as a child like you should have, but then again, you wouldn’t be where you are right now and probably we wouldn’t be enjoying your thoughts in writing (former member of Pleasant View First Ward).

Powerful and insightful
Really enjoyed this book and so happy that Martha narrated it. I found practical information on implementing
“Integrity” in to my every day life as well as storied examples to personalize the information. I especially liked the idea of making change by incremental degree.
