Publisher's summary

Francis Parkman's journal - written more than 150 years ago, in 1846 - provides an eye-witness account of one of the grandest adventures in American history. At age 23, the Harvard-educated Bostonian traveled the Rocky Mountains, living among the Dakota Sioux. In his journal, he captured the color, spirit, and perspective of his era, as well as the exuberant confidence that was the mark of his time. Frank Muller's dramatic reading brings this captivating record to life.

Hard to listen to

The friendliness, yet the savagery, and heartless killing of animals of the Indians written about was very upsetting to me. With just an hour left, I had to stop. I have a very tender heart toward animals… the Puppy Soup is what clinched it. A good work of the telling of Early American History, if it’s indeed true.

really enjoyed the narrative of the west, written by a man who could speak his mind with eloquence and insight.

Review of Oregon Trail

Very interesting writing for it’s time. Several old falsehoods of the time carried forward that are not correct. Having studied and traveled the trail for over 30 years it does portray the basic history.

Interesting

Turned out “The Oregon Trail” by Francis Parkman was not the book I was looking for about the Oregon Trail, but it was interesting. The book was published in 1849. Parkman provided beautiful, detailed descriptions of his travels including the flora and fauna but also people and places. I find one must be careful not to judge but to learn from how things were in the time frame the book was written. Overall, the book was worth the read.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is six hours and six minutes. Frank Muller does a good job narrating the book.

Not the best.

I've read and listened to many other books of similar historical nature and this one was the least entertaining. It's alright. not the most exciting.

Take a walk back in time and through the wild west

Great adventure, and a mental and visual trip back through time. This is the closest thing to being there that I have ever come across. You can almost smell the air and feel their excitement!
