More than a century ago, M. R. James was the provost of King's College, Cambridge. He would gather together a select group of students in his rooms every Christmas Eve, and give a candlelit performance of one of his superbly unsettling ghost stories. Christopher Lee recreates the spine-chilling atmosphere of those evenings, as he dons James' mantle to read these four fearful tales.

Story
Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones) reads chilling tales by the unsung master of the classic ghost story: E. F. Benson. There's nothing sinister about a London bus. Nothing supernatural could occur on a busy train platform. There's nothing terrifying about a little caterpillar. And a telephone, what could be scary about that? Don't be frightened of the dark corners of your room. Don't be alarmed by a sudden inexplicable chill.

The powerful sense of evil – darkness, creepy hairy presences, cloaks, hoods, talons and tentacles – pervades these classic ghost stories by M.R. James. Dark Adventure Radio Theatre presents Robert E. Howard's tale of horrors in Eastern Europe in a 1930s-style radio drama. Charlie Tower seeks refuge from the horrors of the Great War in Berlin's most notorious nightclubs. There a chain of events is set in motion that will lead him across Europe to investigate the mysterious Black Stone. Is it merely a creation of superstitious peasants, or is it a nexus for hideous gods of the ancient world to set foot into ours?

In The World of J.R.R. Tolkien, you will join Dr. Dimitra Fimi to delve into Tolkien’s complex and multilayered mythology, examining all these ingredients and more. In these 10 lectures, you will explore and appreciate Middle-earth as medieval, mythological, and modern, a literary creation that was shaped by forces old and new. And you may be surprised to discover just how much of Tolkien’s legendarium was constructed posthumously, with his son Christopher compiling and publishing many of Tolkien’s later works after his death.

Among the greats of 20th-century horror and fantasy, few names stand above Richard Matheson. Though known by many for novels like I Am Legend and his 16 Twilight Zone episodes, Matheson truly shines in his chilling, masterful short stories. Since his first story appeared in 1950, virtually every major writer of science fiction and fantasy has fallen under his influence, including Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub, and Joe Hill, as well as filmmakers like Stephen Spielberg and J. J. Abrams.

Barbara Pym is one of the 20th-century's wittiest, and most underrated, novelists. Her perceptive comedies of manners, centred around the domestic lives and loves of unassuming middle-class Englishwomen, won her many devoted readers and saw her hailed as a modern-day Jane Austen. Yet she spent 15 years out of print in the 1960s and '70s, until Philip Larkin championed her work in the Times Literary Supplement. Her seventh novel was subsequently shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and writers from Jilly Cooper to Alexander McCall Smith continue to laud her talent today.

Story
In The Canterbury Tales Chaucer created one of the great touchstones of English literature, a masterly collection of chivalric romances, moral allegories and low farce. A story-telling competition between a group of pilgrims from all walks of life is the occasion for a series of tales that range from the Knight's account of courtly love and the ebullient Wife of Bath's Arthurian legend, to the ribald anecdotes of the Miller and the Cook.

Pleasantly refreshing
The theatrical aspect is fresh and serves to boost imagination, albeit appearing a bit distracting at times. The stories are classic and don't really need introduction. I would still prefer the more traditional approach to this vigorous acting out, though. But this was new and entertaining just the same.

Entertaining mix of dramatizations and interviews
While I prefer my M. R. James unabridged, I did enjoy most of the dramatizations in this collection - even when they departed from the stories. My favorites were the ones closest to the originals, and the voice-actors all did an excellent job. I liked the bonus material very much - "The Haunting of M. R. James", an original story suggesting that James' stories were inspired by real-life horrors, was quite entertaining, and I also appreciated the interviews/discussions about James and his work.

Disappointing Package, Should’ve Been Longer
I was looking forward to this release. It includes 12 of James’ stories dramatized, 3 read a new original audio drama and two examinations of his work. It turned out to be disappointing. The 12 stories were far too short. Only partially dramatized and heavily narrated, they are too short to make an impact. You are better off finding readings of the stories in their entirety. The 3 readings are better, the original audio drama is excellent. The two explorations are good. For me, the best adaptation is the Conception of Terror which updated his stories for the modern age and were dramatized in their entirety. The cast and production are excellent.

Your 15 Minutes is up, Mark!
Mark Gattis once again manages to "re-imagine" and "re-boot" more classics, leaving his indelible stamp of mediocrity and hubris on them, like the sticky fingerprints of an over-indulged child.
Apparently he is not content with having mangled Doyle's legendary detective and feels compelled to continue his vandalism of literary classics by butchering the stories of M. R. James.
While the performances and recordings are excellent, it is Gattis' meddling with plots and characters to make them more "contemporary" (i.e. Woke-compliant) which guts these atrocities of their original context, prose, and power.
At this point, I am inclined to pose the same question about Mark Gattis that Henry II asked regarding Thomas Beckett: "Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?"
