Publisher's summary

She thinks the island will keep her safe—she is wrong.

Traumatised by the death of a child in her care, top London paediatrician Claire seeks refuge on remote Selkie Island in the wilds of the Irish Sea with her husband Daniel and their baby daughter Kitty. Hidden away in Daniel’s old family home, Claire hopes to be as cut off from her guilt as she is from the mainland, but can she find peace in a place so full of its own secrets?

Twenty years earlier, Daniel’s parents left the island in a boat and never made it to the mainland. Mystery surrounds their deaths—and their lives. Why did they set out late at night in a storm? What had really been going on at the house? Even as Claire begins to recover her sense of self amid the island’s rugged beauty, she can’t shake off a chilling suspicion that Selkie Island has a dark history that the locals just can’t face—and that it somehow has a connection to her own life.

When baby Kitty suddenly disappears, Claire’s fragile world falls apart. The only way to secure her future is to uncover the past, but the closer she gets to answers, the more danger she finds herself in. Will she be able to save her family or will the island’s dark secrets take another life?

Good story!

I don’t often buy the daily deals, but this one intrigued me. I liked it a lot! It was an interesting story, and I was hooked from the start. I was surprised by some of the twists. Glad I got this one, and I would definitely recommend it.

mysterious but sometimes hard to follow

I enjoyed the characters but sometimes was difficult to distinguish if it was real time or in the past. narrator was ok, but was sometimes harder to hear.

Very unique story.

Very interesting and really does keep you guessing to the end. I guess I’m not a big fan of so many narrators. Gets me a little confused (although one would think it would be easier), but that me. Definitely worth a listen if you want a different and intriguing story!

Remarkably good!

I just finished listening to this book, & am lying here in bed reflecting on it. I just now realized how it is completely based on implausible situations, occurrences and pretexts. However, it is so well written and narrated that suspending disbelief and just going with it all happened without me having made an effort towards those ends. Honestly very impressed with this book. Would certainly recommend it, and read another by this author. (Great use of multiple narrators, btw).

Interesting but Unsavoury

This had a clever plot and was well written and performed. However I found the actions of even heroes/heroines distasteful

Good story, decent “twist”

I was thinking 3 stars for most of the story but wound up thinking 4 stars for the twist

Well played awesome twist!

Even though the twist is really great, it seemed to me this story was stuck due to the content and perpetual waiting for the big reveal. It’s difficult for me to finish a book/audio with so much repetition. I can understand now why the author felt it might be necessary but it just kept me from connecting and committing to the characters. There was potential for so much more.

Narration was good with the different accents but emotional range was limited.
