Jack Valentine seemed to have it all. He made good money as an ad man and looked good doing it. He had a hot apartment, cool friends, even a slick car - at least until the hectic Monday morning a truck smashed into it, sending the critically injured Jack to the hospital. Everything happens for a reason, though, and Jack’s reason reveals itself in the silver-haired cancer patient who becomes his roommate one evening. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

In How to Release Anxiety, Gabby Bernstein offers simple, actionable steps for feeling better, living with more ease, and showing up for those around us. Gabby’s unusual advice: Rather than manage your anxiety, what if you befriended it? Gabby posits that what we befriend, we can ultimately be at ease with. So she invites us to get curious.

Negotiations are incredibly stressful and can bring out the worst in people. Wouldn’t it be better if there were a principled way to negotiate? Wouldn’t it be even better if there were a way to treat people fairly and get treated fairly in a negotiation? Split the Pie offers a new approach that does both—a field-tested method that reframes how negotiations play out. Barry Nalebuff, a professor at Yale School of Management, helps identify what’s really at stake in a negotiation: the “pie.” The negotiation pie is the additional value created through an agreement to work together.

Good common sense principles to review
Robin is great and this book doesn’t define him. The book is not earth shattering: a good listicle of common sense principles about decent living (not all necessarily solid: e.g., treat your guests like gods… huh? why??) in 101 mini essays. It feels more like conversations with friends on a nice summer night after a glass of wine or two.

Standing Ovation and Slow Clap, Robin Sharma.
It's not every day that you come across a book you just have to finish. This is the case for me on this book. Like everyone else, I've encountered Robin Sharma on "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari". I have always been amused by how he uses analogy in ideas I normally complicate and how he influences me that they are actually quite simple. Also, he's reminded me to be tolerant and kind in the most unobtrusive kind of way. There's some sort of a "spiritual renewal" felt after reaching the end of the book. It feels as though the values that I was taught and have always believed in when I was younger had resurfaced and it's an extremely good thing. If this were a book-reading done in person, there's no doubt I'd have stood up and clapped slow as a show of appreciation.
