Publisher's summary

Now updated with new material throughout, Alicia F. Lieberman's The Emotional Life of the Toddler is the seminal, detailed look into the varied and intense emotional life of children aged one to three. Hailed as "groundbreaking" by The Boston Globe after its initial publication, the new edition includes the latest research on this crucial stage of development.

Anyone who has followed an active toddler around for a day knows that a child of this age is a whirlwind of explosive, contradictory, and ever-changing emotions. Alicia F. Lieberman offers an in-depth examination of toddlers' emotional development and illuminates how to optimize this crucial stage so that toddlers can develop into emotionally healthy children and adults.

Drawing on her lifelong research, Dr. Lieberman addresses commonly asked questions and issues. Why, for example, is "no" often the favorite response of the toddler? How should parents deal with the anger they might feel when their toddler is being aggressively stubborn? Why does a crying toddler run to his mother for a hug only to push himself vigorously away as soon as she begins to embrace him? This updated edition also addresses 21st-century concerns such as how to handle screen time on devices and parenting in a post-Internet world.

With the help of numerous examples and vivid cases, Lieberman answers these and other questions, providing in the process a rich, insightful profile of the roller-coaster emotional world of the toddler.

Practical!

A very practical view of toddlers in so many aspects of their lives. As a parent I resonated with a lot in this book!

Best I’ve experienced!

I’ve listened to several books on child development, and this one has been the best beating out several of the other best selling books in my opinion. Many relatable examples provided and great insight!

Soo much in this 1 audiobook

I loved that it provides just so much info in it. It's not one of those books that you can listen on one breathe, takes time: have to listen, process info overnight maybe and then come back to it. So in that sense it's not an easy one, but really no much general info and brainstorming common knowledge. but from the first words straight to the point. So informative. very satisfied. A must for a parent.

good material buried in here

I started this and stopped it and had to push myself to pick it back up and finish it. There is good info in here, but it is not well organized, esp in the first few chapters. Also, narration is very slow and boring.

I loved it; so informative

Recommend to all parents, or people wanting to start a family. I wish I would’ve read sooner, perhaps during pregnancy to get insight of what is to come. I think it’s a good book to note and highlight to refer back to during challenging times.

Very theoretical

I found this book very rhetorical, lack of any practical tools about how to approach my toddler.
