Publisher's summary

In this poignant and sparkling debut, a lovable widower embarks on a life-changing adventure.

Sixty-nine-year-old Arthur Pepper lives a simple life. He gets out of bed at precisely 7:30 a.m., just as he did when his wife, Miriam, was alive. He dresses in the same gray slacks and mustard sweater-vest; waters his fern, Frederica; and heads out to his garden.

But on the one-year anniversary of Miriam's death, something changes. Sorting through Miriam's possessions, Arthur finds an exquisite gold charm bracelet he's never seen before. What follows is a surprising and unforgettable odyssey that takes Arthur from London to Paris and as far as India in an epic quest to find out the truth about his wife's secret life before they met - a journey that leads him to find hope, healing, and self-discovery in the most unexpected places.

Featuring an unforgettable cast of characters with big hearts and irresistible flaws, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper is a curiously charming debut and a joyous celebration of life's infinite possibilities.

Wonderful fun light hearted story

Some reviewers have compared this to A Man Called Ove. They are not even remotely the same. The only commonality is the fact that the main character in both books is an elderly man who lost his wife. I loved reading about Ove, but I loved this one just as much. A story of exploration, of finding yourself again at an old age and after a heartbreaking loss. A feel good story to lighten your day. Don't hesitate to read this one. I'll have to explore more by this author.

a la Harold Fry's Pilgrimage

Reminiscent of "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry." Since that book is one of my favorite books of all time (and I've been around for a long time and read many books), to have a book compare favorably to it is high praise.

A delightful story!

I really had only a mild interest in this one until I started listening. Then I fell in love with the main character, Arthur. This was a heartwarming and hopeful story, full of laughter, years and simple joy. As a person "of a certain age", hearing Arthur's story makes me glad to be alive.

How the past affects the future...

This is the story of a journey that begins when widower Arthur cleans out his wife's closet and finds a charm bracelet he never knew she had. He wants to find out what each charm means and in the process, he finds himself on many adventures meeting people he never even thought he would talk to. The more he learns about his wife's past, the more he begins to doubt that he ever really knew her. Along the way, his relationships with his adult children come back together and he learns to give himself the freedom to try new things. I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it to others who like to read about life experiences. Another reviewer compared this story to A Man Called Ove and I would agree.
