Publisher's summary

The City of God is one of the most important works of Christian history and philosophy ever written. The writings of St. Augustine are as intriguing to the casual reader as it is to Christian researchers. St. Augustine's work provides insight into Western thought and the development of Western civilizations. The City of God provides the reader with an artful contrast between earthy cities and those in heaven as a representation of the eternal struggle between good and evil. The City of God was originally penned in the early 5th century as a response to the prevalent belief that Christianity was to blame for the fall of Rome. St. Augustine is known as one of the most influential Fathers of the Catholic Church. Born November 13, 354, Augustine would eventually be recognized as a Saint by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Christian Church, and the Anglican Communion.

Great book.

St.Augustine was a genius his outlook on scripture and the world is eye opening. A must read for any Christian looking to deepen their understanding of Scripture and the world that we live in or anyone who is interested in n philosophy. The first few chapter's are a little rough though he goes deep into Roman life and Gods probably more than we need to know but relevant in his time. After those chapters the book takes off and you get to see the true genius of Augustine.

A philosophical KO

Wow. Augustine was a smart, smart man. To my follow Christians - read this, and be tutored (and I say this as a Southern Baptist.). To those who are not Christians- if you are intellectually curious about arguments for faith at all, or a lover of history, or both (and I am both!) then please give this a go.

St Augustine writings

What a wonderful example of how life was for early Christians told through a philosophical lens.

Awesome voice!

Quite an incredible and realistic voice. I felt as if the Great Saint Augustine himself was teaching me. Loved it!

Thank you God for Saint Augustine & the listen.

An astonishing intellect and spirit filled guide is St. Augustine, and the narrative reader was superb. I've had weeks of daily listening pleasure, enthralled and elevated. I repeat that experience again, after a short period of digestion. Simply beautiful.

Content

The book was excellent, especially the last few sections that were not so repetitive; albeit, worthy of historical, literary, and theological interest.

The City of God

Extensive detail and self examination of who God is or should be. The examination is tied closely with the Bible and the Christian God Yahweh, his son and the Holy Spirit. Heavy reading and deep thought is required by the reader.

Great narration of The City of God

I found it helpful to both listen to the Audible narration while I read and highlighted parts of the text of St. Augustine's The City of God. it is a dense work, and hard to take in everything, but provides so much important advice/training/teaching for everyone! The culmination in the last chapter of the last book, when we all shall see God and have forgotten how to sin and more, was perfect. Amen.
