Editorial reviews
Performer Owen Jordan brings his upbeat, dramatic voice to this rendition of Lynd Ward's 1952 Caldecott-winning book. A boy named Johnny is humiliated by having the only barn in town without a bear skin, but when he goes out to shoot a big one, he brings home a little cub instead. The bear grows into a nuisance, and Johnny is forced to make some hard decisions. A great listen to teach kids the importance of taking responsibility for their actions and to dissuade them from inappropriate pets.

Brave Irene is Irene Bobbin, the dressmaker's daughter. Her mother, Mrs. Bobbin, isn't feeling so well and can't possibly deliver the beautiful ball gown she's made for the duchess to wear that very evening. So plucky Irene volunteers to get the gown to the palace on time, in spite of the fierce snowstorm that's brewing—quite an errand for a little girl. But where there's a will, there's a way, as Irene proves in the danger-fraught adventure that follows. Story
Barbara Cooney's story of Alice Rumphius, who longed to travel the world, live in a house by the sea, and do something to make the world more beautiful, has a timeless quality that resonates with each new generation. The countless lupines that bloom along the coast of Maine are the legacy of the real Miss Rumphius, the Lupine Lady, who scattered lupine seeds everywhere she went. Miss Rumphius received the American Book Award in the year of publication.

Story
The green leaves on the trees are changing to red and gold. A chilly wind blows from the north. Mrs. Cottontail and her littlest rabbit watch a flock of wild geese in the sky. “Cold winter days are near,” she tells him. All through the woods, creatures of every size are busy. Squirrels are storing acorns and seeds under logs. The ground hog is growing a warm fur coat. The blue bird begins his long trip south. They must hurry—soon the big snow is coming.

A boy and his bear
I just loved reading this to my youngest boy, particularly during the K-2 period. Great story about the relationship between a boy and his bear as the bear begins to grow up and "cause trouble."
