Publisher's summary
A mutilated body was found by two young hunters…frozen… and slashed viciously with a knife. Part of the face was eaten away. Horace Badger, the dean of men at the nearby at Reliance College had been murdered. But why so brutally? By whom was the question, and why? Stosh Klewzewski, the cruel leader of the violent Catholic White Knights is charged with the murder. But did he do it?
Defense attorney Paul Flaherty and his legal assistant, law student Sam Waterman, have the job of proving his innocence – even if they have questions about it themselves.
From the battlefields and horrors of WWII, to the courtrooms, politics, and sexual abuse scandals of the Catholic church in 1950’s Pennsylvania, Norman Shabel has written a gripping, suspenseful story that’s hard to put down until the shocking end. Just as compelling as his first novel, God Knows No Heroes. The Badger Game is a great read that keeps you hooked from the first minute to the final tick.

It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Last night, we celebrated our anniversary. Over candlelight, we talked about the children, our work, and I was so happy, and felt so loved. But the next morning, when I check my phone, there is a message. From a friend. And a string of photos appear of my husband, Will, with another woman: walking along the street holding hands. Going into fancy hotels. Standing at a window, his arms around her, her head on his shoulder…

It’s so kind of our neighbours to throw this party welcoming us to our new home. My husband and I finally moved to the right place. A happy, safe street where nobody knows about my mistakes. But I soon learn their smiling faces hide even deadlier secrets… As I take in the little plates of sandwiches arranged over checked tablecloths, the lavish cocktails, and children playing, I finally feel happy in my new home with Owen. I love hearing the gossip from the local families; the whispers about which wives I should avoid, and which husbands sneak out at night.

I shouldn’t be alive. I should’ve died in that plane crash. Instead, I survived. Thrived, even. After all, I’m a rock star and a billionaire. There’s nothing I can’t buy. Nothing, except peace. And when it all comes crashing down around me… The guilt. The pain. The sorrow. That’s when she appears. The one woman I’m not allowed to love. I needed her to fill the void after everything was lost. There she was, ready, and grieving too. Both of us are broken, shattered people.

Story
Brighton, 1950. The body of a girl is found cut into three pieces. Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens is convinced the killer is mimicking a famous magic trick—the Zig Zag Girl. The inventor of the trick, Max Mephisto, is an old war friend of Edgar’s. They served together in a shadowy unit called the Magic Men, a special ops troop that used stage tricks to confound the enemy. Max is on the traveling show circuit, touring seaside towns with ventriloquists, sword-swallowers and dancing girls.
