With more than half a million copies sold, Robert Mason's Chickenhawk is one of the best-selling books ever written about the Vietnam War. Fascinated with flying from a young age, Mason earned his private pilot's license even before graduating high school. He enlisted in the army in 1964 and endured an extremely challenging "weeding out" process in an effort to fly helicopters. Sent to Vietnam, he survived more than 1,000 air combat missions despite the violence and brutality exploding all around him.

This memoir describes first-hand the harrowing experiences of helicopter pilots and crews in combat operations, from the far South to the DMZ, including the infamous Ashau Valley, Hamburger Hill, LZ Airborne, and others. 19 Minutes to Live illustrates the incredible courage and determination of helicopter pilots and crews supporting those heroes that carried a rucksack and a rifle in Vietnam.

One of the first to come out of the famed Underwater Demolition Team 21, he was an initial member—a "plank owner"—of America's deadliest and most elite fighting force, the U.S. Navy SEALs. Through three tours in the jungle hell of Vietnam, he walked the point—staying alert to trip wires, booby traps, and punji pits, guiding his squad of amphibious fighters on missions of rescue, reconnaissance, and demolition—confronting a war's unique terrors head-on, unprotected . . . and unafraid.

With an unswerving concern for every American soldier trapped by enemy fire, and a fearlessness that became legendary, Ron Alexander earned enough official praise to become the second most decorated helicopter pilot of the Vietnam era. Special Operations pilots are notoriously reticent; they don't talk about their missions, at least not to anyone outside their small community. But now, with the publication of The Night Stalkers, Durant and Steven Hartov shed a fascinating light on these mysterious super commandos and take readers into a world they have only imagined.

Publisher's summary
Sometimes you do everything right, but it just isn't your day. A part fails and your helicopter comes apart in flight, or, another aircraft runs into you and the pieces of both fall to the ground below, or the enemy gunner pulls the trigger at just the right moment and his rounds find your aircraft in exactly the right spot to take it out of the sky. Whichever way it happens, it wasn't your day.
Which is why, after 24 years and over 5,000 flight hours with four armed services, Major Robert Curtis was so surprised at being alive when he passed his retirement physical. Starting with enlisting in the Army to fly helicopters during Vietnam, and continuing on through service with the National Guard, Marine Corps, and Royal Navy, he flew eight different helicopters - from the wooden-bladed OH-13E, through the Chinook, SeaKnight, and SeaKing, in war and peace around the world. During that time over 50 of his friends died in crashes, both in combat and in accidents, but somehow his skill, and not an inconsiderable amount of luck and superstition, saw him through.

During the early years of World War II in the Pacific theatre, against overwhelming odds, young American airmen flew the longest and most perilous bombing missions of the war. In War for the Hell of It, Cobleigh shares his perspectives in a deeply personal account of a fighter pilot's life, one filled with moral ambiguity and military absurdities offset by the undeniable thrill of flying a fighter plane. With well-crafted prose that puts you into his Phantom's cockpit, Cobleigh vividly recounts the unexplainable loss of his wingman, the useless missions he flew, the need to trust his reflexes, eyesight, aggressiveness, and his survival instincts in the heat of combat.

Dan Hampton was a leading member of the Wild Weasels, the elite Air Force fighter squadrons whose mission is recognized as the most dangerous job in modern air combat. In Vietnam, we weren’t out to be heroes. We just did our jobs. For a helicopter pilot, each day was like all the others. You flew the mission and never stopped to think that it might be your last. Wonderful book!
Robert Curtis did an incredible job of sharing so many varied experiences from an amazing life. This book is filled with stories from a long and highly respected aviation career in service to his fellow Americans. Mr. Curtis writes with a sense of humility that is borne of a lifetime of wisdom. I had a difficult time pacing myself so that I could savor this book as long as possible. The book is read by David Colacci, who has always had a talent for making you feel as if you are write there beside the author in personal conversation. Thank you Mr. Curtis for sharing a small part of a life well lived.

excellent narrative and superb delivery
I found this story to be very entertaining, told at a relaxed pace with just the right touch of wry humor and seriousness to truly convey the author's experiences. The voice actor was well above average in his delivery of the narrative.

Well write compilation of his flying career.
I loved hearing about his flying experiences both during war and peace time. It was as though I was listening to my father and other pilots that I grew up around. Great book

best book about flying I have read
I love aviation and I have read many biographies and war stories about aviators from world war two to desert Storm. None were more informative, interesting and candid than this one. I highly recommend you read this book

Well Done. Bravo Zulu. Luck and superstition
This is a memoir of an aviator who served a career flying mostly helicopters in the Army, National Guard and USMC. It does not attempt to be the definitive history of the Viet Nam war. It captures the time and career path of one of my contemporaries and brings a vivid insight into the nuances and difficulties of a career in the cockpit of military flying both under fire and in the post conflict peacetime.
In a career which exacts a dear price for any shortcoming, the author cheated death time and again, by what he concludes was blind luck and superstition, which I would instead attribute to God’s good grace. Either way, it was a great read. Now that he has successfully run the course and has the luxury of hindsight I must conclude that it was more than blind luck and superstition that got him over the finish line. Well done! While so many others flew with and along side him only to become casualties to war, weather, maintenance or pilot error, he finished the course by the narrowest of margins, and the story he has to share is well worth the heeding.

Thoroughly entertained!
The book is a series of notable stories that sample various points in time along the author's career as an aircraft pilot. Being a fixed wing and aspiring rotary pilot I found the stories entertaining and the anecdotes useful and sometimes quite funny. This is one I will likely listen to again.

An Exciting Vietnam war history book it is not.
I listen to a lot of military history wish this was not recommended in my suggestions. A rather dull story with a small stint in Vietnam flying freight told in a monotone voice. Since audible thinks exchanging 5 books out of 45 Purchases is excessive I would have to call and explain if I wanted to return this one so I suffered through it mostly while napping durning my vacation. If you'd like a good book to fall asleep to I highly recommend.
