An alien AI called the System had taken over Earth and transformed his apartment building into a 100-floor dungeon tower of traps, monsters, and loot. Trapped at the top, Lucas and the other residents have just one year to reach the ground floor and escape before the tower self-destructs. That’s his first problem. The second is he slept through the System’s welcome orientation, so a Class was picked for him. Lucas is now a Blood Reaver. A brutal Class based on speed, ferocity, and striking from the shadows.

Especially not Eris Lanyer, lord of the city, the very same who was supposed to keep people such as myself safe! The nobleman killed me without a second thought for the sole purpose of testing the blade he had just acquired! So here I am, burning with such a rage at this flagrant lack of justice. My hate is so immense that I'm unable to pass to the afterlife, and so I return as a Revenant.

Me? I was an innocent bystander in a shootout between mobsters and spawned monsters. Thankfully, the System granted me the power to bring forth monsters from the void. With this ability to command magical beasts, I might just live out the apocalypse. Together with a ragtag group of survivors, we're wading through the mayhem while searching for somewhere safe. Somewhere that monsters aren't desperately trying to kill us, where the opportunistic among humanity aren't looking for easy XP.

Publisher's summary
Kaden knows how the world ends, and he's determined to stop it.
The Hunt has descended upon Earth, bestowing deadly powers upon ordinary individuals and pitting them against one another. In this treacherous game, players must vanquish their adversaries to claim their power. With each triumph, Hunters unearth unprecedented abilities that evolve in strange, unexpected ways.
Armed with a roadmap of the future, Kaden will race against time to thwart mysterious enemies, all while waging a relentless battle against the impending apocalypse. However, when he uncovers the truth about an otherworldly realm known as the Madness, and the malevolent purpose behind the Hunt, he must decide: will he continue as a weapon of tyrants, or will he spite the dark?
Spite the Dark combines elements of 80s and 90s action films with the awe-inspiring violence and beauty of anime. It’s got a hint of Time Recursion, a dash of Apocalypse, and a ton of awesome. Please be aware that this story contains graphic violence.

Aaaaand Action!
If you like “The Terminator”, you’ll like this book.
If you like “Blade”, you’ll like this book.
If you like badass main characters, well, you get the point.
This is a very action packed, contemporary sci fi book with a mix of guns and melee weapons. It has a unique “end of the world” storyline, solid characters, and enjoyable fantasy mechanics. I’d say the only thing that this book doesn’t have (and it’s okay that it doesn’t) is a romance subplot. I always love a little romance in a book but, it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the book; so zero complaint from me.
If I had to complain about this book, it would be that the book brought up theology a lot. Nothing disrespectful or anything, and frankly, pretty well handled. Nonetheless, I always get a bit guarded when a fantasy book brings up real world subjects of a rather sensitive nature. It’s one of a few reasons I generally avoid contemporary fantasy. Like I said, though, it was pretty tactfully handled; regardless of your real world inclinations on the matter.
All that said, it was a really good book and am planning on continuing with the next one.

Amazing action!
This book is a testament to overwhelming odds, and using the right class skills to overcome. With planning, the MC is able to overcome a lot of things. This is like a more planned out James Bond movie. This is similar to the Resonance cycle by this author in pacing, and fights. Quite enjoyed it!

I'm just getting into RPG Lit as a reader, and I really enjoyed this one! With how fast-paced this is and with the expressive reader, I got wrapped up in the story and just wanted to keep listening - why yes, I can run some errands after work, let me turn on my audiobook ;p. lol. jokes aside, I highly recommend and I can't wait for the next book!

A fun and swiftly paced action story
I enjoyed this swiftly moving story. The characters have a fixed goal and map to it. The character grows in a believable way from his unbelievable roots. I really enjoyed the progression system and I am looking forward to the next book to see how everyone grows and changes. Seeing the main character and his dad grow and evolve as the story progresses is fantastic and something few people do well.

I gave up
Sorry, but I could not finish this one. I tried several times but it was just not for me. Way to modernistic type of story. I like and love things like Jack Reacher stories but this just left me cold.
Others may find it perfect but it was not for me.
