Classic SF

Our heroine was grown by an artificial intelligent battleship to act as a impromptu ship Captain. Eventhough this young girl was implanted with memories to function she struggles with survival the human condition and loneliness. Well thought-out book. My only criticism is the second book has yet to be released.

A nice transhuman story.

A good Sci-Fi feature a transhuman protagonist. The story is engaging and entertaining and the author does not reveal to much too soon and I am looking forward to the next installment.

A Great SciFi Contribution to LitRPG

ShipCore is a soft LitRPG space adventure. The main character has a system that she is not always in agreement with and sometimes opposes to make for an interesting take on the system idea. The interplay between the characters is nice in a slice of life kind of way.

One concern, is that this entire book feels a bit like backstory. Things happen, but at the same time the story seems to wander without a real goal. I want to hear the next story, but would like the main characters to have more goals than the next piece of scrap.

Bland start, but had me going

Story started a little bland, and I was afraid that it would remain at the same pace and plot, but near the end they jumped space and that gave a fresh air.
I did not get the LitRPG yet, but I heard that I should expect it in the next book.
My biggest complaint was the characters names. Alice and Alex sound almost the same for me (as I'm a non-English listener). Sometimes it had Alice this, Alex that, Alex that, Alice that, really close and I got confused. I had to stop what I was doing, rewind, close my eyes and focus. I usually listen audiobooks when I'm doing basic tasks (cleaning the house, doing dishes, making grocery, etc) and this was a down for me.
Overall, I will keep following the next ones.

A fantastic new sci-fi story!

This was a great find, The book starts with a slow burn and doesn't take any easy shortcuts in build up of the characters, world, or story. The narrator, Reba Buhr, did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life and adding the perfect amount of drama and emotion to every scene. Each character is unique and well written, and the universe they exist in is filled with a lot of slow revealed secrets. I was a little confused with the "litRPG" entry in the title as the book does not have the typical characteristics you'd expect in that genre and instead is more akin to a progression sci-fi novel. Apparently, this changes in book two and builds on some foundations set in book one. That never takes away from this book, however, as the progression is hard-won and gives the story a sense of satisfaction. I am looking forward to the next installment!

LitRPG Gold

A note upfront: I'm not a big LitRPG listener so I'll review this based on what it's setting out to do for its intended audience. The positives first: 1) The prose is solid. 2) The concept is a sci-fi wrinkle I haven't seen much since Mission Genesis from the 90s. 3) The narrator is FANTASTIC. She reminds me of Jean Reed Bahle from Anne McCaffrey's The Rowan. Even if she were reading a phone book, my ears wouldn't complain. That said, parts of the story feel like a phone book to me (sorry, I had to say it), particularly when it dives into tasks and strategies. I understand this is par for LitRPG, so genre fans will probably find the deep attention to detail as a plus. I think the key miss for me was I couldn't put myself in the shoes of the characters to wonder what I would do. I didn't feel enough tension in their choices, partly because I didn't understand enough of the rules of the situation. Again, all this is my preferences affecting my enjoyment--I wasn't the intended audience, so I'm not knocking stars off. I can tell a lot of love was put into this story. The characters are sympathetic and it's nice to see how their friendship grows. The human-AI war driving the book is solidly executed. Haiku AIs was a nice touch. Did it better than those Cylon jumper drones in baths. My hat's off to Erios909 for putting in the hard work of crafting the story.
