Publisher's summary

There is more in the water than you know.

When ex-astronaut Brock Finlander tries to reconnect with his long-lost daughter, a marine biologist, they discover strange things happening to marine life on Claw Island.

In a rush to identify why the crabs are growing out of control, they find more than they bargained for.

Now, they have only 72 hours before the cover-up becomes dangerous and unstoppable. But danger never expects to run into a man like Brock Finlander. A man who will not just respond, but will attack it with everything he has: His intellect, his military training, and his family.

But when the animals you’re trying to save become the enemy, how do you fight back?

Together, father and daughter must learn that family comes first before time runs out and they lose each other, and the island, forever.

What they thought they knew about the water was wrong...so very, very, wrong.

If you like thrilling action and heartwarming, endearing characters, you’ll love this coastal action-adventure set in the very center of Maryland’s blue crab population, the Chesapeake Bay, surrounded by NASA, NOAA, the Coast Guard, and the Annapolis Naval Academy.

Fast-paced action from the get-go.

This novel will keep you glued to your headset. I’ve always enjoyed stories transporting you to the magic of the Eastern Seaboard. Normally, blue crabs will have your mouth watering. I love crabs, but not the one’s you’ll meet in this novel. Great narration that keeps you captivated.

Great book, totally enjoyable!

Let me start off by saying— I do NOT enjoy audio books. I prefer to read the "old-fashioned" way.
Perhaps it's my age, or perhaps it's my "pre-google" brain. But I find that I get too distracted listening, I enjoy being IN the moment and really interacting with the pages.
That all goes out the window with this book.

The narrator's performance is truly riveting...and of course it has to be backed up by great writing and a great story (which it is)

I don't want to give anything away about the book.
Suffice to say: you're gonna enjoy this one!

If you like adventure/mystery/thriller then this is the book for you.
I think this is EJ Foster's first novel, but you'd never know it.
Great flow, excellent story progression—it's got everything you could ask for!

100% the best audio book I've ever listened to!

Exciting Book!

I really loved listening to Shadow Claw. It was enjoyable listening to such an amazing narrator was literally on the edge of my seat wanting to just keep listening and listening. The characters developed nicely in the story and made me really connect with each one of them. When you listen to this book you almost feel like your in their shoes! I felt every one of their emotions like pain and anxiety throughout the whole story. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I am looking forward to them and want them now!!

Strong story, characters, and performance

This was a fun read / listen about Brock Finlander, his estranged family, and the curious happenings in the waters of Claw Island.

The story itself is fast-paced, engaging, and exciting. I can’t really go too far into it otherwise I’d give the whole book away, but it’s one that I think most fiction readers will enjoy.

The narration / performance is really well done too. I loved the different voices for the characters .. really helped me keep track of who was who, who was saying what, etc. I’d definitely recommend it.

A Sci-Fi, Monster, Mystery Mashup

3.75 out of 5 stars

Shadow Claw was an interesting book for me. I want to chalk this one up as science fiction (I mean it is, but I mean that in a weird way). The book lends itself to be very similar to books that I’ve read before. It has the coastal vibe along with the main male character who wants to seek some sort of rekindling with someone he wronged in the past. But the main thing that they’re fighting (other than greed) is borderline not believable. I was able to suspend my disbelief since I’ve played the Fallout games and honestly – the main bad guys they were fighting (the non-human ones at least) reminded me of Mirelurk (google it, but understand it’s likely a spoiler).

The writing in this was pretty good. Not the best I’ve heard but, the things that I had an issue with were more how it translated to audio other than how it was actually written. Thankfully the narration by veteran narrator Nick Sullivan really helps solidify this one for me. His performance added a lot to the story and the characters and likely bumped up my enjoyment of the story a bit as well.

Overall, Shadow Claw was an interesting book that I still don’t know how I feel about it. It wasn’t a 1 or 2 star by any means. And honestly the characters were written in a way that I definitely want to read more stories with them. I thought that Foster did a good job setting this up to be a series without leaving us hanging. It could be a one-off and I’d be okay with that. But I know there’s more stories with Brock Finlander at the helm.

Fast Paced

Really enjoyed the character development, not something I would usually be interested, but it kept me engaged throughout. I really enjoyed the out of the box story line. Brock Finlander definitely doesn't disappoint, looking forward to Book 2!

Fun beach listen

I listen to almost everything outdoors, and I listened to this as I walked down a beach boardwalk. It is a fun listen that reminds me of those old hardy boys books. The protagonist is an older grandpa that is estranged from his family. Soon after he arrives at the island where he grew up, strange things start happening. All of this brings his family back together again. I had a great time listening to the book. The narrator is excellent. There is some language, but it doesn't distract from the listen.

Fast-paced, LOVED it!

First off, the villains in this audiobook were utterly hate-able, and I love when that happens. The heros were such good characters, even the dog! I listened to this at the beach, and couldn't turn it off. I can't wait for the next one. Well done! So much fun.
