Publisher's summary
Boston PI Sunny Randall investigates the dark side of social media in this exciting new thriller in the bestselling series.
Sunny Randall’s newest client, Blake, seems to have it all: he is an Instagram influencer, with all the perks the lifestyle entails—a beautiful girlfriend, wealth, and adoring fans. But one of those fans has turned ugly, and Sunny is brought on board by Blake’s manager, Bethany, to protect him and to uncover who is out to kill him. In doing so, she investigates a glamorous world rife with lies and schemes…and ties to a dangerous criminal scene.
When Bethany goes missing and the threats against Blake escalate, Sunny realizes that in order to solve this case, she has to find out exactly who Blake and Bethany are, behind the Instagram filters. While digging into their pasts, she is also forced to confront her own, as old friends—and ex-husbands—reappear. With a combination of old-school crime-solving skills and modern internet savvy, Sunny will stop at nothing to catch a killer.
Critic reviews
“Taking over the franchise for the first time, Gaylin proves the equal of Sunny’s creator in plotting….She doesn’t sound all that much like Parker; she sounds better. Gaylin brings Sunny to terms with contemporary social media even as she uncovers motives older than you can imagine.” —Kirkus Reviews
“One of the best mysteries I have read this year, and readers’ heads will be spinning long before the unexpected conclusion. I defy you to put this book down.” —BookReporter
“Gaylin elevates Parker’s original Sunny by bringing a more contemporary depiction, capturing her sense of humor, confidence, insecurities, anxieties and bravery....We hope Bad Influence is just the beginning of the partnership of Sunny and Gaylin.” —South Florida Sun Sentinel

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Tia Monroe was smart, sassy, and successful. Sure, she could get a little crazy at times - life around Tia was never boring - but that was part of her appeal. And while she didn't see herself as classically beautiful, she had no shortage of options in the boyfriend department. She just hadn't found one who held her interest. Until she laid eyes on Eric Larsson, and then it was lust at first sight. He packed the perfect mix of smoldering sexy and unapologetic cool into his blond-haired, blue-eyed, ridiculously hot six-foot-four frame.

Story
It is 1947 when Joseph Burke, ex-Marine, ex-husband, ex-somebody–is hired as a bodyguard to protect Lauren Roach, 25 and spoiled rotten. The unlikely duo becomes entangled with Burke’s boyhood hero, color-barrier breaking baseball player Jackie Robinson, in a story that is both thrilling and engaging. It is in the historical character Jackie Robinson that Mr. Parker finds inspiration and Joseph Burke may find his redemption. This is a work of fiction about a real man. Most of what I’ve written I’ve made up. I have, however, attempted to render Jackie Robinson accurately. As he was, or as I imagined him to be, in 1947, when I was turning 15, and he was changing the world. The rest is altogether fiction. It may be more Burke’s story then Jackie’s story. But, without Jackie, Burke would have had no story. And neither would I. Robert B Parker.

A Very Good Read
I'd never previous read Alison Gaylin, but I've been a fan of the Sunny Randall novels since the first one by Robert B. Parker. So, while I wasn't sure what to expect on one hand, on the other I was in familiar, highly enjoyable territory. I will say that Alison Gaylin did a wonderful job of capturing the spirit and style of the Parker/Lupica written novels and then some. I feel as though, in my opinion at least, Bad Influence might be in the ranks of some of the best work in the Parker universe as a whole. It's a very good story, well written, with a nice ending following a well drawn reveal. I highly recommend Bad Influence and I hope Alison Gaylin continues to write Sunny Randall in the future.

Great to have another Sunny Randall novel
I very much enjoyed "Bad Influence". The story kept me guessing about the characters. Robert B. Parker gave us amazing characters and Alison Gaylin has taken these characters and spun an excellent tale!

Great first Sunny novel
I’ve read or listened to them all. This one was as good as if Parker wrote it. Thank you it was a fantastic story with nice twists and turns.
