Publisher's summary

Vodou, vudon, vudu, and voodoo have captivated the imaginations of Americans for centuries. Everyone is familiar with New Orleans voodoo with images of black candles, chicken feet, and skulls that invoke fear and awe to outsiders. Voodoo as practiced in the United States has become an amalgam of witchcraft, necromancy, rootwork, conjure, and a catchall word for any type of magic that seems ominous, dark, and scary.

In the Caribbean, however, voodoo is spelled vodou and is practiced as a traditional African religion. The Africans who were brought to the New World were able to preserve their religion alive by concealing their practices behind the veil of Catholicism. They syncretized the worship of their gods and goddesses with Catholic saints and their feast days. They also preserved alive the memory of the Arawak Taino Indian spirits that were on the island when they arrived.

The vodou that is practiced in Haiti and the Dominican Republic is a powerful form of spiritism that has been in continuous practice since the first Africans landed on the island. But did you know there is another tradition of vodou hardly anyone knows about in the United States? It's called "sanse", and it's the vodou Puerto Ricans do.

If you are an English-speaking Puerto Rican American who would like to get in touch with their roots, this audiobook is for you. This book will train you to become a medium and give you the tools to work toward initiation into the tradition if you feel it's call. In this book, I will teach you the history of Puerto Rican spiritism and vodou as it relates to the other islands. Also, we will set up your boveda so that you can contact your beloved and elevated ancestors. The hierarchy of spirits in sanse will be covered, as well as herbal preparations for traditional healing.

This is not a book of get-rich-quick spells or love-drawing magic. It is a serious study of spiritism with a protocol to help you heal wounds in your soul that you did not know existed. I hope you decide to come along on this journey.

Voice

I had a hard time following this audiobook as this is a book about Puerto Ricans and narrated by a Caucasian sounding voice which felt disturbing and distracting for what this is. As a Puerto Rican listening to this book, it’s disappointing. Good context.

Puerto Ricans u must get this

This information needs to b passed on . PR Espiritismo often. takes a back seat to other forms of Caribbean ATRS.
This is a very important book. Especially for people outside of Puerto Rico. it shows us that we come from somewhere. And that our path is valid and powerful. IT CAN SERVE AS AN ANCHOR. So much of our history was taken away from us. Now is the time to take it back.
On a side note...Much love to all people. But a man with a European accent reading this material is Very Offensive. I don't even know where to begin on that.....Audible I love u but having someone read our tuths to Us is better served by one of us.
The dominant Conquistador culture reader should not be reading this book. It is jarring and really messed up. And I am pretty sure the author and other Puerti Ricans and people of color get it.
Change the reader he is offensive, and it is the hight of white privilege to have him read this.
He sounds like the kind of people we would be hiding these practices from. Audible get in touch with ur audience and bring in a little cultural empathy plz. It hurts to listen to this!
Hope I did not offend. I Never mention Racism and white privilege but this goes too far. Re record this PlZ
Much applause and blessings for the author., ( Papito u the Man) This is a Great Book.

Terrible Performance

Although the author seems to be very knowledgeable on the matter, I thought the book would contain more history of how the Sanse originated on the island, and in which towns is it currently practiced. I also think that the narrator should be Latino or at least someone who knows how to pronounce words in Spanish. It is nearly impossible to understand when he is attempting to use Spanish words or names.

Here is the analogy: It is as if the Harry Potter series were narrated by an America from the Deep South. It just "does not" go together.
