Pickwick, de Charles Dickens, e Memórias de um sargento de milícias, de Manuel Antônio de Almeida, são os títulos que inauguram a coleção Clássicos Globo. Desde seus primórdios, na Porto Alegre dos anos 1930 e 1940, a Globo teve como objetivo constituir um acervo de livros que fossem referência para o leitor brasileiro. Ao longo de várias décadas, a editora atraiu um grupo de escritores e intelectuais formado por nomes como Erico Verissimo, Mario Quintana, Paulo Rónai, Carlos Drummond de Andrade e Sérgio Milliet, que assumiram a empreitada pioneira de verter grandes clássicos para a língua portuguesa, constituindo assim um catálogo de preciosidades literárias. Recentemente, já em sua sede paulistana, a editora passou a revalorizar esse acervo com a reedição, em novo projeto gráfico, das célebres traduções da "Globo da rua da Praia" (como era conhecida a editora na capital gaúcha). Foi assim com "clássicos modernos" como Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Roger Martin du Gard ou Somerset Maugham. Agora, com a coleção Clássicos Globo, coordenada pelo jornalista Manuel da Costa Pinto (colunista da Folha de S. Paulo), inicia-se um trabalho sistemático de reedição das traduções desse acervo, bem como sua ampliação, com a inclusão de novos títulos. Além de seu significado para a história editorial brasileira, portanto, a coleção terá duas importantes inovações: Novos aparatos críticos: no caso de livros que já pertenciam ao acervo da Globo - como acontece com A Cartuxa de Parma e As aventuras do sr. Pickwick - a reedição revista e atualizada das traduções será precedida de uma "Nota introdutória" (que destaca aspectos da recepção crítica do livro ao longo da história) e de um "Posfácio" de ensaísta ou pesquisador. Clássicos da língua portuguesa: além de traduções, a coleção incluirá clássicos da língua portuguesa em novas edições - como é o caso de Memórias de um sargento de milícias, que resgata sua forma original de publicação, em folhetins, no Correio Mercantil do Rio de Janeiro, no século XIX. Dentro dessas duas linhas editoriais, os dois próximos títulos a serem lançados pela coleção Clássicos Globo são Contos e novelas, reunindo a totalidade dos textos ficcionais de Voltaire, e A Capital!, romance de Eça de Queirós em volume baseado na edição crítica portuguesa que resgata o texto original. Conheça os primeiros títulos da coleção Clássicos Globo Os três livros que abrem a coleção ocupam posição simétrica dentro das literaturas de seus respectivos países: são alguns dos momentos mais felizes e bem acabados da literatura realista; ao mesmo tempo recapitulam a própria história do gênero romanesco e suas raízes picarescas. E a edição de Memórias de um sargento de milícias, de Manuel Antônio de Almeida, restaura sua forma folhetinesca original, preservando as asperezas verbais e os traços de anti-monarquismo e lusofobia que, posteriormente, foram suavizados pelo autor para publicação em livro. Há, portanto, uma homogeneidade entre essas obras aparentemente tão díspares: estruturadas como uma seqüência de episódios burlescos ou melodramáticos quase independentes, esses três livros atualizam o gênero picaresco (que foi um dos precursores do romance burguês); ao mesmo tempo, lançam mão de narrativas estilhaçadas para anunciar a crise do próprio romance - não sendo por acaso que Stendhal seria uma das fontes da narrativa anti-naturalista do século XX, da mesma maneira que Manuel Antônio de Almeida anteciparia tanto os anti-heróis de Machado de Assis quanto Macunaíma, o herói sem nenhum caráter de Mário de Andrade.
