Così un lanzichenecco descrive il saccheggio che le truppe imperiali infliggono a Roma. Le truppe a difesa della città sono deboli, le mura e l'artiglieria non bastano a fermare gli assedianti. Clemente VII riesce a riparare a Castel Sant'Angelo solo grazie al sacrificio dell'intera Guardia svizzera. Da lì assiste per otto lunghissimi mesi a uno spettacolo inaudito: Roma messa a ferro e fuoco come Troia, Gerusalemme, Cartagine.
Un'orda di soldati affamati, senza paga e incontrollati assaltano le case, i palazzi, le chiese di una città intera e Campo de' Fiori è trasformato in un mercato a cielo aperto per le opere rubate nei palazzi della nobiltà romana. Quella data, secondo alcuni storici, segna la fine della stagione più intensa del Rinascimento italiano, la diaspora degli artisti che avevano fatto di Roma un esempio di splendore. Quello che rimane è un senso di sgomento, di paura, quasi il segno tangibile di una punizione apocalittica.
