Uncover the evidence-based science to slowing the effects of aging, from the New York Times bestselling author of the How Not to Die series

When Dr. Michael Greger, founder of NutritionFacts.org, dove into the top peer-reviewed anti-aging medical research, he realized that diet could regulate every one of the most promising strategies for combating the effects of aging. We don’t need Big Pharma to keep us feeling young—we already have the tools. In How Not to Age, the internationally renowned physician and nutritionist breaks down the science of aging and chronic illness and explains how to help avoid the diseases most commonly encountered in our journeys through life.

Physicians have long treated aging as a malady, but getting older does not have to mean getting sicker. There are eleven pathways for aging in our bodies’ cells and we can disrupt each of them. Processes like autophagy, the upcycling of unusable junk, can be boosted with spermidine, a compound found in tempeh, mushrooms, and wheat germ. Senescent “zombie” cells that spew inflammation and are linked to many age-related diseases may be cleared in part with quercetin-rich foods like onions, apples, and kale. And we can combat effects of aging without breaking the bank. Why spend a small fortune on vitamin C and nicotinamide facial serums when you can make your own for up to 2,000 times cheaper?

Inspired by the dietary and lifestyle patterns of centenarians and residents of “blue zone” regions where people live the longest, Dr. Greger presents simple, accessible, and evidence-based methods to preserve the body functions that keep you feeling youthful, both physically and mentally. Brimming with expertise and actionable takeaways, How Not to Age lays out practical strategies for achieving ultimate longevity.

Video Links Are Just Sprinkles on Top

There are a lot of video links scattered throughout the book, I see how it can "interrupt" the listening experience for some people as they feel the need to pause and check out the referenced videos. But in fact, the book is complete in itself, the videos just provide additional facts to show the "logical steps" Dr. Greger has took to arrive at his conclusions in the book, because he doesn't want anyone to just take his word for it. One can perfectly well enjoy the book as it is, and only go check videos when needing a fuller picture.

The manuscript was originally twice as long, but the publisher finds it expensive and unconventional to publish a 1300-page book (or a 50-hour audio). So the "book + videos" format is how Dr. Greger and his team resolve to scram 2 books in 1. It's their way of letting us have all the information at our disposal.

Though I do hope Audible upload the complementary PDF and fix the chapter titles soon.

(Oh, love the book, thanks!)

I think this book is life changing

I bought this book because it is on the bestseller list, and I just turned 60. I was very moved by it and have already started making changes the author suggests. I intend to watch every power point in the attachment. And then buy his first book, for I am also obese. Then I intend to watch his podcasts. And let’s see where I am a year from now.

Science and not hyperbole

Very well written. Extensive, reliable research sources are used to illustrate just why so many Americans are unnecessarily suffering from lifestyle induced illnesses. It's not complicated, nor solved with THE "magical" food or supplement. Suggestion to listeners: While I now admire Dr. Gregor's work, he talks and reads SO fast and slurred that listening at a slower speed is necessary to understand him.

A brilliant undertaking

I took my health from D+ to A+ after reading Dr. Gregor’s “How Not to Die” in Dec. 2015, despite being older than I care to say. (And my doctor agrees). This latest book is going to help me keep my A+ health as I continue to age. I’ve already made a few changes.

Dr. Gregor’s narration is wonderful. No one else could have done it.
I love that the table of contents is spelled out, so I can quickly find exactly what I want to hear.
I also bought the print edition and am glad I did. The supplement I cut out (because I looked it up in the detailed index and learned of the risk) has already paid for the book.

Dr. Gregor’s combing of all the research is extremely thorough. I believe he’s giving me the bottom line on so many things I’ve wondered about. And this audiobook does give the bottom line without looking at the available video. So far I’ve just found the need to look at one of the available videos. And how fantastic that I could do that! I’ve read another book that made that resource available. Let’s not make perfect the enemy of the good concerning the bit of time to find the exact material.

Honestly, I’d probably be dead by now if it wasn’t for Dr. Gregor. But instead I’m hiking, loving what I eat more than I did pre-Gregor, and actually feeling wonderful and enjoying life. And this book exceeded my expectations. I wish I could personally thank this brilliant, beautiful soul.

I think this is an excellent choice for using an Audible credit because of the time it takes to read the book and much of it I expect to listen to again.

Missing PDF

I love NutritionFacts.org and all the work Dr. Greger does. I have all of his books on audio and some on print. This is the first that didn't have an accompanying PDF. The audiobook reads like it should have a PDF. I called Audible, but they said they have no information regarding this and this is how it came to them from the publisher. I also reached out to Dr. Greger's social media team regarding this issue. Hopefully, it will get fixed soon. Otherwise, it makes for very clunky listening. I might wait for the print version to be available in my public library.

Very long, but

I was a bit intimidated about the length of this book at first, but my curiosity won out, and I so glad it did! The author touched on just about EVERYTHING you can think of that pertains, not only to aging, but also dying and diet. They all pretty much lean towards the WFPD diet being at the center of life, aging, and health. I learned way more than I wanted to, and am spreading the knowledge in as many conversations as I can. I love research-based facts. My college professors were sticklers for it, so now I am as well. I started saying, "Put it to the test!", before he could get it out! Made me laugh and feel as though I was still paying attention 20+ hours into it. This book is definitely a keeper, in that there as so many details to remember you will definitely need to go back and listen again. I plan to make a list of the facts/details I need personally and who knows. It might change over time.
