Publisher's summary

In Get Trump: The Threat to Civil Liberties, Due Process, and Our Constitutional Rule of Law, Alan Dershowitz—#1 New York Times bestselling author and one of America’s most respected legal scholars—analyzes the unremitting efforts by political opponents of Donald Trump to “get” him—to stop him from running in 2024—at any cost.

Alan Dershowitz has been called “one of the most prominent and consistent defenders of civil liberties in America” by Politico and “the nation’s most peripatetic civil liberties lawyer and one of its most distinguished defenders of individual rights” by Newsweek.

Get Trump makes clear that unconstitutional efforts to stop Trump from retaking the presidency challenge the very foundations of our liberty: due process, right to counsel, and free speech. Those who justify these dangerous departures from the rule of law argue that the threat posed by a second Trump presidency is “different” and “immediate,” while the departures from constitutional norms are longer term and more abstract.

Dershowitz explains that defenders of Trump’s constitutional rights—even those like him who strongly oppose Trump politically—are sought to be silenced; their free speech rights attacked, their integrity questioned, and their careers threatened. Much of the media substitutes advocacy against Trump for objective reporting, while many in academia petition and propagandize against rights they previously valued—all in the interest of getting Trump.

The essence of justice is that it must be equally applicable to all, Dershowitz notes. No one is above the law but digging to find crimes in order to influence an election does not constitute the equal application of the law. In order to assure equal application in comparable situations, he proposes two criteria for indicting a likely candidate of the opposing party: the Richard Nixon standard and the Hillary Clinton standard—and most recently, the Joe Biden standard.

Get Trump warns that regardless of whether this anti-democratic effort to stop Trump from running succeeds or fails, it is likely to create dangerous precedents that will lie around like loaded weapons ready to be deployed against other controversial candidates, officials, or citizens about whom it can be argued that the danger they pose “is different.”

A must read but Democrats won’t.

A good and concise book that explains the past, present, and future in a legal and thoughtful way.

An important book to read or hear.

An outstanding example of judicial objectivity. This treatment of important national interests and lucid explanations provides foundational principles for fair and equal application of law according to the US CONSTITUTION .

Good Book

Excellent title and couldn’t be more spot on. He’s the lone true classical Liberal still standing.

Must read this one

Not written in a partisan manner but in a Constitutional manner. while I frequently disagree with the Queen policy items he does stand by his principles without fail. a true man of honor.

Disappointing

Interesting points but became narcissistic. Look how great i am. Then became a screed against Trump to ingratiate himself with his MV friends.

Your liberal friends are not coming back

Dear Mr. Dershowitz ,
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and principles. Your story was well done in an understandable way that a layman can understand. Throughout the presentation I felt like you were trying to straddle the fence between telling the facts I such a way as to not further drive your less principled friends further away. Overall I gained respect for you. I have always had unfathomable respect for the principles and the people that founded our country. I’m glad I got to know you better via this book. Unfortunately your liberal friends will not come back until you compromise yourself.
Best,
Bill

This is a difficult book to review

I've always like Alan Dershowitz. From what I've previously seen, he seems like an intelligent man. However, my opinion of him is lower after listening to this book. Don't get me wrong. He makes a lot of good points, but somehow manages to come off as incredibly naive or just flat out dumb in some areas. It seems like he wants to appeal to two different audiences by appeasing both. It doesn't work. The book is primarily about Trump as the title suggests, but he also goes off tangents that don't seem worthwhile. He brings up a few situations about himself that just serve to make him seem astonishingly vain. He also brings up the Alec Baldwin shooting. He seems to think that prosecuting him would somehow be political. He compares it to Brandon Lee's death while filming The Crow. It's a very odd thing to throw in and his argument doesn't make sense because the details of those cases are very different.

Overall, this was a very disappointing book.

America gets a constitutional smack.

Fact filled and very enlightening. Thank you for a great book. Get Trump shows how we have rights and will not comply to any one who messes with our rights under God and the founding fathers period.

Principle is a difficult hill to die on.

I may not agree with Mr Dershowitz’s views at times. But I will always defend his right to state his opinion I believe political correctness has no place in politics. Let alone life. Good luck in the future and keep the flags of decent flying.

Alan Dershowitz

While I can’t say I’m always happy about his take on the law, I have been listening to him long enough to realize that he is correct in most of his arguments. Unfortunately, people will still do and believe what they wish.

I do disagree on the similarities between Biden and Trump in the documents cases. I understand his take as far as VP documents, however, top secret documents from when he was a senator would have had to be viewed in a SKIF and therefore must have been intentionally removed which is a major offense.

I appreciate this book and like getting his opinions in more real time via his podcast. I highly recommend the podcast to anyone wanting a reasonably unbiased view of law proceedings.
