El caballero de Olmedo, basada en un hecho histórico que fue motivo de múltiples recreaciones artísticas –la muerte de don Juan de Vivero, caballero de Olmedo, a manos de su vecino Miguel Ruiz en 1521–, es una de las obras maestras de Lope de Vega, con un mecanismo poético y teatral que alcanza la perfección extrema.
Amor y muerte son los ejes de esta "comedia" cuyo final deja un halo de escepticismo ante lo vano de la existencia. Para su elaborada construcción, Lope desplegó todo su ingenio, combinando sabiamente los elementos del arte dramático propios de la época y condensando en ella todas las formas y los modelos poéticos en uso. Nada en la obra resulta superfluo; todo, incluso el inicial tono alegre y primaveral, está al servicio de la tragedia que, desde el principio, se avanza con gran sutileza: "Que de noche le mataron / al caballero, / la gala de Medina, / la flor de Olmedo." Ignacio Arellano y Juan Manuel Escudero, de la Universidad de Navarra, ofrecen un claro análisis de la obra.
Lope de Vega Carpio nació en Madrid el 25 de noviembre de 1562. Fue uno de los poetas y dramaturgos clave del Siglo de Oro español. Además fue uno de los autores más prolíficos de la literatura universal.
