Publisher's summary
Jeremiah sits on his bicycle and stares down at the small, flattened body of a dead frog. At just six-years-old he suffers a painful realization: In this existence you are either The Squasher, or The Squashed.
Raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, Jeremiah also knows he must be obedient and devout—or risk banishment. But the boy refuses to be another frog under God’s wheel. At first his acts of rebellion are small and inconsequential, but soon his schemes take on a wilder, grander scale and he finds himself being hunted by the police.
Through mad goose chases, natural disaster, homelessness, and maximum-security prison, Jeremiah struggles against the world, always wriggling one step ahead of the giant wheel bearing down on him. But when a shocking accident leaves him half dead and disfigured, the young man has nowhere left to run. Either he breaks free of the hate, hurt, and rage that’s fueled his every action, or becomes another one of life’s hapless victims.
Dead Frogs is a riveting true story about growing up in broken systems, the incredible resilience of the human spirit, and the power of forgiveness and redemption.

After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side? In Going Infinite Lewis sets out to answer this question, taking listeners into the mind of Bankman-Fried.

Story
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Story
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Beautiful writing
I enjoyed this a lot. The allegorical quality was subtle yet satisfying. The author has a gift for fleshing out real characters. And the narration was fantastic.

Worth the Read for the Hopeful
"Dead Frogs" is a powerful coming-of-age memoir that chronicles Jeremiah's tumultuous journey from a sheltered Jehovah's Witness upbringing to a life on the run. The central image of the dead frog, crushed by an indifferent world, sets the tone for Jeremiah's early realization of the harsh realities of existence.
The book delves into the internal conflict Jeremiah faces. He's raised within a rigid religious structure that demands obedience, yet his inquisitive and rebellious nature pushes him to challenge authority. This struggle fuels his acts of defiance, which escalate from minor infractions to full-blown clashes with societal norms and the law.
Jeremiah's path leads him through a harrowing sequence of events - homelessness, prison, and a life-altering accident. These experiences force him to confront his anger and disillusionment, pushing him to a crossroads. Will he succumb to the bitterness and resentment that have driven him, or will he find a path towards healing and forgiveness?
"Dead Frogs" is more than just a personal story; it's a commentary on societal structures that can leave individuals feeling ostracized and powerless. Jeremiah's journey highlights the resilience of the human spirit, even in the face of immense hardship. The book's core message lies in the transformative power of forgiveness, offering a glimmer of hope for those struggling within broken systems.
