Publisher's summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Kitty Charing's life-changing inheritance comes with a catch.

Her eccentric and childless guardian, Mr. Penicuik, is leaving Kitty all of his vast fortune - but with one condition. She must marry one of his five grand-nephews. However, Kitty's clear favourite - the rakish Jack Westruther - doesn't appear at all interested in the arrangement. To make Jack jealous, Kitty impulsively convinces his cousin, the kind-hearted and chivalrous Freddy Standen, to enter into a pretend engagement.

But the more time she spends with Freddy, the more Kitty wonders whether Jack is the right choice after all....

My Favorite Georgette Heyer Book

A fun, lighthearted story. The narration isn’t bad, I think the narrator took great pains to be authentic when it came to Freddy being a pink of the ton, but not always easy on the ears. This story is my all time favorite of Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances, and then The Masqueraders and The Grand Sophy. Kitty is a good heroine, but Freddy is my favorite character.

Hysterical, lovable performance

Whoever found the readers for the more recent productions of Heyer’s regency novels like this one did a phenomenal job (see also Friday’s Child and False Colours). The reader showcases how Heyer maintains literary mastery in the oft-overly sentimental romance genre with attention to her humor, subtlety and dialogue. Great job!

One of my favorite GH novels

I am an avid and particular Audible listener. The narration was ok but I’ve heard better. But the story which I’ve loved for years made it tolerable.

Great story; poor narration

The narrator’s voice of Kitty was especially terrible. It turned a young, naive, sweet girl into a blase jaded woman with a speaking disability.

Georgette Heyer rules!

Light and Amusing

This is a fun story with some great characters and amusing plot lines. I thought the narrator did a good job with most of the characters - though I didn’t love all the accents.

Love this version

Georgette Heyer is beyond compare and I've always enjoyed this book. However Raj Ghatak really brought the story to life. Giving Dolph an Irish accent was fantastic! I will definitely listen to this again. Can he please narrate all Georgette Heyer novels!?

Fun Convoluted Rom-Com

Fun Convoluted Rom-Com—it’s a challenge to keep the many cousins straight, however, the anti hero is a charming guy!

Wonderful romp, narration a little robotic

This story is just so much fun. One of the most delightful, funny and entertaining of Heyer’s stories

The narration was a little peculiar. I felt intonation was often off and the speech stilted like a robot. Certain words like Phaeton wore pronounced in an odd way. But once I got used to it I was able to allow the lively story to carry me off.
