Historia
Alice McDermott's striking audiobook, Charming Billy, is a study of the lies that bind and the weight of familial love, of the way good intentions can be as destructive as the truth they were meant to hide. Billy Lynch's family and friends have gathered to comfort his widow, and to pay their respects to one of the last great romantics. As they trade tales of his famous humor, immense charm, and consuming sorrow, a complex portrait emerges of an enigmatic man, a loyal friend, a beloved husband, an incurable alcoholic.

Historia
American women—American wives—have been mostly minor characters in the literature of the Vietnam War, but in Absolution they take center stage. Tricia is a shy newlywed, married to a rising attorney on loan to navy intelligence. Charlene is a practiced corporate spouse and mother of three, a beauty and a bully. In Saigon in 1963, the two women form a wary alliance as they balance the era’s mandate to be “helpmeets” to their ambitious husbands with their own, inchoate impulse to “do good” for the people of Vietnam.

In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Grace Reinhart Sachs is living the only life she ever wanted for herself. Devoted to her husband, a pediatric oncologist at a major cancer hospital, their young son Henry, and the patients she sees in her therapy practice, her days are full of familiar things: She lives in the very New York apartment in which she was raised, and sends Henry to the school she herself once attended. Dismayed by the ways in which women delude themselves, Grace is also the author of a book You Should Have Known, in which she cautions women to really hear what men are trying to tell them.

Early one morning on the shore of the Thames, DCI Samuel Owusu is called to the scene of a gruesome discovery. When Owusu sends the evidence for examination, he learns the bones are connected to a cold case that left three people dead on the kitchen floor in a Chelsea mansion thirty years ago. Rachel Rimmer has also received a shock—her husband, Michael, has been found dead in the cellar of his house in France. All signs point to an intruder, and the French police need her to come urgently to answer questions about Michael and his past that she very much doesn’t want to answer.

Resumen del Editor
Theresa must cope with the challenges presented by the neighborhood's waiflike children, the tumultuous households of her employers, the mysteriously compelling attentions of an aging painter, and Daisy's fragility of body and spirit as she makes the perilous crossing into adulthood.
McDermott's deeply etched rendering of all that happened that seemingly idyllic season explores the depths of everyday life with inimitable insight and grace.
Reseñas de la Crítica
"McDermott's gorgeous novel is laced with sly literary allusions and provocative insights into the enigma of sexual desire, the mutability of art, death's haunting presence, our need for fantasies, and the endless struggle to keep love pure." (Booklist)

On a dim winter afternoon, a young Irish immigrant opens the gas taps in his Brooklyn tenement. He is determined to prove - to the subway bosses who have recently fired him, to his badgering, pregnant wife - "that the hours of his life belong to himself alone". In the aftermath of the fire that follows, Sister St. Savior, an aging nun, appears unbidden to direct the way forward for his widow and his unborn child.

Sweet, sad.. but really sweet
I liked the tension of not knowing exactly what "the problem" was and I was way off on my assumption....
more chick-lit, mommy-maudlin, but tender and sweet.

I did stick with it but it bugged me
I guess was interested in the characters or something, plus I've enjoyed the author's other books, so I stuck with it But I have to say, the sexual relationship between the old man and Theresa really disturbed me. In another era this guy would've gone to jail. And the fact that the character Theresa didn't seem damaged or troubled by it was even more confusing.

Elegant writing but PLOTLESS!
Wasted talent! The reader was great, the writer talented, but the story reeeeeeally sucked. What kind of fantasies is this writer having hooking up a 15 year old "model" beauty with a 70+ year old drunk! Eeeewwwwwww. This is sick.

Stuggling to finish this book
I found that at first the story held my attention. I'll admit I was curious if one of the "older men" was going to seduce Theresa. The storyline seemed like it would be a "coming of age" tale. But four hours into the book I am struggling to finish it. I am finding it hard to care about Theresa. The scene with the dead cat did it for me. My God, how many words can one reasonably write about such an event. I was beginning to feel like that poor cat - only instead of being hit by a car, I felt like I was dragged along for miles.
I'll probably finish listening to it, only because I am curious if Daisy has some kind of blood disease. Other than that, I really don't care what happens to any of the other characters.
Prior to listening to this book, I listened to "The Secret Life of Bees" - a definite 5+ star book in my opinion.

Characters too unbelievable
Protagonist too knowledgeable, too mature for a teenage girl. Physical relationship with elderly man ridiculous. Reader was excellent with children's voices but music was very annoying and added to melodramatic flair.

Almost fell asleep...
this was like watching paint dry it was so dull, hard to imagine 7 hours and 10 minutes into it that Daisy has only been there for 4 days or so! Do we really need to hear every detail about their dull dull days. The relationship between Teresa (aka St. Francis of Assisi) and the artist has no credibility whatsoever.
Please please Audible tell your readers to stop trying to do foreign accents. They sound idiotic in general.

Just too sad
The story was full of layered observed detail , and with a look into the lives of some of the wealthy , spoiled , bored residents of East Hampton, Long Island.... with Therese as the 15 year old babysitter a protagonist who is altogether a refreshing endearing caring ..even savior individual. ( if somewhat too perfect)
I did not read the book, I heard it thru audible and found the readers voice almost unbearably annoying as she changed her tone and quality to fit the children’s characters ( mostly Daisy and Flora)
Another problem I had with the story was the improbable and disgusting portrayal of the lecherous old narcissistic artist intent on ruining the lives of the teenager, the 8 year old, as well as his own little 2 year old girl. and the wives / mothers who are away in the city, or have abandoned their children to the care of housekeepers, cooks and the saintly babysitter Therese..
