Publisher's summary

Best-selling author Beverly Jenkins makes the move to audiobook with this rich and moving story that introduces us to the beautiful Kansas town of Henry Adams, and the townspeople who make it unique.

Bernadine Brown is a woman with money to spend. Henry Adams is a town in desperate need of cash. But after Bernadine puts up the money, she has some ideas about how the town should be run. Will the townspeople be willing to shake up their comfortable lives to share the gift they’ve been given with others who really need it?

One of the few all Black towns founded after Reconstruction, over a century later Henry Adams was falling apart. So Mayor Trenton July took a chance and put his town up for sale on the internet. With a new owner in town, and the ex-mayor and his friends up in arms and doing everything they can to turn the deal on its head, will this be the death of Henry Adams...or its rebirth?

The Nguzo Saba Exemplified!

I loved everything about this story!

This is the kind of story that I’ve been waiting for all of my conscious life! I say conscious life because we all know the many problems we face as a colonized people. We’ve been made aware of this all of our lives through narrative, experiences, losses, and pain. But, Ms. Jenkins’s foresight has demonstrated a very poignant way to address some of the problems. For this, I am deeply appreciative!

Kwanzaa, the only holiday celebrating African American life created by an African man born in America, is based on seven principles called the Nguzo Saba.
Umoja, Unity
Kujichagulia, Self Determination
Ujima, Collective Work & responsibility
Ujamaa, Cooperative Economics
Nia, Purpose
Kuumba, Creativity
Imani, Faith

This book embodies ALL of these principles seamlessly! It is well written, well narrated, and anointed!

A MUST READ!

Good book, entertaining.

This is a good book. I believe the narrator missed some nuance but I recommend it.

Very Good

I would like to believe that the casual queer-phobic joke would have been edited out if this book were published today, and some of the voice characterization choices of the narrator were more effective than others. But overall, this is a delightful series about reclaiming history and economics from racism, a small town's communal commitment to each other, and family love. Off to buy the next volume in the series.
