Story
Before the lights went out, Jack Warrant never considered himself a prepper. That was someone on the edge, a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday cultist who had a fatalistic view of the world. He was neither a theorist nor a cultist. He was an optimist. At least that was what he told himself when the darker thoughts creeped into his psyche as he stared at the ceiling in the middle of the night. Whenever he started down the rabbit hole, he always clawed his way back into the sunlight.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

A Civil War Re-enactor Saves a Community?
- By Cidney on 07-05-12
Publisher's summary
Almost five years ago, America—as everyone knew it—came to an abrupt end in a spectacular coup d'état. It was called the Liberation by those progressives and radicals that screamed for its outcome; the Fall by its victims whose freedoms were trampled. The White House and the Capitol were overrun by anarchists, and the leaders of the once-proud nation were either imprisoned or sent to social quarantine camps.
The president was arrested and eventually died in prison, or so everyone was led to believe. America was rebooted in a new progressive/socialist image, Newmerica. The United States of old was gone, its history erased and rewritten, its icons destroyed. By the time people tried to organize resistance, it was too late. The citizens lost their history, their flag, their traditions, their freedoms, and their leaders. Newmerica is a state of reparations, citizens turning on citizens, where even the churches are targets of social justice.
Five years later, an unlikely group of patriots emerges from the shadows seeking a restoration of their nation. Two secret service agents struggle with their secrets from the night of the Fall. One son of a patriotic college professor struggles with his father’s legacy and the important artifacts that his father managed to preserve. A young man finds himself face-to-face with the lies the Newmerica government has told him and forced to become a fugitive. A covert operative of the new government seeks out the truth about the "traitor-President’s" fate while coming to terms with her own dark past. Twists of fate or destiny bring these people together with the mission of trying to save what is left of the once-United States.
Time is running out as the forces of the government hunt down this group of renegades, hoping to smother, once and for all, any trace of what was America.

Three terrorist attacks are launched from freighters against the United States. Only one fully succeeds, but in the blink of an eye all of the country west of the Rocky Mountains is transformed into the technological equivalent of the 18th century - no electricity, no computers, no electronics of anykind, or any of the amenities of modern life that depend on them. This is the story of ordinary and extraordinary people, high and low, who struggle to survive in a mortally wounded nation, as America's enemies within and without circle for the kill.

For years, while Iran and North Korea kept Western diplomats busy, China and Russia have been quietly seeding the US with spies and soldiers. Now, a silent army of occupation lurks inside US borders, and for America, it is already too late. When the assault begins—via an EMP strike that disables the US electrical grid and neutralizes her defenses all in one fell swoop—the US is caught completely unprepared. Different Narrator needed
I must say the story was fantastic, and very scary, scary in the sense that how easily we can fall in this evil dystopian world, if American citizens do not wake up and smell the coffee. While we still can, vote for freedom not reparations, free college tuition, free health care, etc., remember my fellow Americans, and I am not a natural born American citizen, I was born in Italy, albeit I was 6 years old when I came to America, nothing is free, there is always a price to pay. I hope more Americans listen to or read this book, if nothing else it may open up your eyes to a possible hell on earth. Having said all that, I wish they chose someone else to narrate this book, every character, male, female, young or old sounded like a 90 year old man with a smoking problem, most times you could not tell which character was a man or a woman. With these exceptions this audible book could have easily garnered 5 stars, I don't know, maybe they should get a woman to narrate this particular story.

Thrilling Novel; Sub-Par performance.
Exciting, entertaining, imaginable. Held back by the narration. Frequent changes in volume, cadence, and tone. As well as mispronunciations. Altogether, still a thorough recommendation.

a fun what if
A well written book, but if you are left leaning you may find this book rubs you the wrong way and not worth your time. I liked it not because of ideology, but the writers skill. That said I hope his what if is just a fantasy, and no extremists get to create this story in real life.

Alternative history thriller
Pardoe plunges the reader into an alternative reality in which extreme ideologues overthrow the US government and control society. He braids the lives of multiple characters to examine the different aspects of this alternative society. Pardoe is eager to explicitly comment on politics, such as the way the Youth Corp pays members based on oppression or the police have been disbanded for being too racist and in their place exists para-military that terrorize dissidents. Pardoe’s writing is expository in style. I particularly appreciated that each character had a unique personal characteristic even if they were very minor. I also enjoyed the badass, vivid descriptions in the action scenes: as the reader, I had a hard time predicting who would win the fight which kept me in my toes. Pardoe is very explicit with his conservative political commentary and I respect a bold writer.
