Publisher's summary

DI Kelly Porter is about to discover just how dark things can get in the Lake District.

When a young woman is found unclothed, unspeaking at an ancient stone circle it's not clear if any crime has been committed. DI Kelly Porter and her team start looking into the circumstances, but the mystery girl disappears.

Soon after, a brutal murder is committed and sinister markings at the scene indicate that the killer had a message. The investigation reveals that in the beautiful Lake District there are those who believe in ancient ways, and within those circles old resentments are spilling over into terrible violence.

Kelly has all the pieces to solve the puzzle, but to put them together she must confront a figure from her past: One who nearly destroyed all that she holds dear. Will she avoid the same fate this time, or can the killer stay one step ahead of her to the bitter end?

A captivating and atmospheric detective novel from a rising star in British crime fiction, perfect for fans of Patricia Gibney and Cara Hunter.

Unfortunately Disappointed

I've enjoyed the other books in the series buf couldn't get I to this one. I persisted, hoping that moment would come, but it didn't .. it just seemed to go on and on about nothing much

Finally we see DI Kelly Porter is a REAL person!

This was another great book in the DI Kelly Porter series - my favorite so far being Book 5. I won't say it's my favorite murder mystery series. But! It is a great series nonetheless.
However, throughout all of the books thus far, perfect Kelly Porter just seems to always get her man, never tends to have any trouble for what she does at work even though she doesn't always follow the rules, does what she wants, and everyone at work is just an absolute treasure and easy to work with and is great at their jobs and love and respect her. She doesn't have much trouble in her personal life either, with the exception of her sister which isn't really that big of a deal. It makes for a pretty one-dimensional storyline.
Finally, in this story, at least towards the end, we see that there might be just a little bit of trouble in paradise for Kelly Porter. Not like I want that for her, I really admire/resonate with Kelly's story and personality; however, life isn't just a walk on water for everyone, and it's good to know shes human. 😉 Keep em' coming Rachel Lynch!

Disappointed ☹️

Okay. Least favorite of the series. It went wrong from the beginning and kept going downhill. I’m not saying this lightly I really have enjoyed the other titles. I wish I was refunded.

Not the best book in the series

Definitely not the best in the series (still a very good series of books though). The story is not enough for a book and so there is a lot more filler than in other books in the series. It also takes DI Port a long time to figure out the killer when it seems very obvious early on in the story.

Fascinating plot

I enjoy the Kelly Porter series, and the plot in this volume makes for interesting listening, given its focus on pagan religions. I am getting a bit tired of "the teachet," though. Surely there are other criminals who could emerge?

Too much reference to animal cruelty

I didn’t finish this book. I couldn’t handle the descriptions of what they did to the animals. Very disappointed in this book. Usually really Enjoy them.

Predictable and repetitive

The killer was obvious from the moment they were introduced. The focus on Kelly’s friends and family as victims in the series has become repetitive. I ended up skipping portions about the animal abuse.

Graphic Animal Cruelty

Shocking turn. I have no idea why the author devolved into this subject but I do not find animal torture mysterious or entertaining. Obviously, I returned the book and will not continue to follow the series.

Felt betrayed by stomach-turning scenes

I have enjoyed previous books in this series. Not this one. I sense that the author lost her way with this plot and the nauseating details she included. From about a third of the way through, I knew who had done it and who would continue to do the sadistic, sickening killings of people and helpless animals. The victim of one of the most disgusting crimes was unbelievably stupid - walked into something anyone would have avoided. Also, the narrator's admittedly lovely voice seemed oddly detached from the atrocities she described. I will return this book. No amount of gorgeous descriptive writing about the Lake District makes up for the awfulness of this work.
