Publisher's summary

A collection of humorous autobiographical essays by the Academy Award-nominated actress and star of Up in the Air and Pitch Perfect.

"I'm excited to publish my first book, and because I get uncomfortable when people have high expectations, I'd like to use this opportunity to showcase my ineptitude and pettiness and the frequency with which I embarrass myself. And while many of my female inspirations who have become authors are incredibly well educated and accomplished comedy writers, I'm very, very funny on Twitter, according to BuzzFeed and my mom, so I feel like this is a great idea. Quick question: Are run-on sentences still frowned upon? Wait, is ending a sentence with a preposition still frowned upon? I mean, upon frowned? Dammit!" (Anna Kendrick)

Anna Kendrick's autobiographical collection of essays amusingly recounts memorable moments throughout her life, from her middle-class upbringing in New England to the blockbuster movies that have made her one of Hollywood's most popular actresses today. Expanding upon the witty and ironic dispatches for which she is known, Anna Kendrick's essays offer her one-of-a-kind commentary on the absurdities she's experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture.

Critic reviews

"Actress Anna Kendrick narrates her wry and witty collection of autobiographical essays about growing up in Portland, Maine.... Her quick pace, sometimes sarcastic tone, and unmistakably familiar voice enhance funny and shrewd reflections on her ordinary girl's life." ( AudioFile)

Humorous and Nicely Performed

Anna Kendrick's performance of her own composition is humorous and compelling. Her delivery exhibits dead pan and dry humor. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a light and honest read.

She's hilarious!

Incredibly relatable, quirky and humble in her own scrappy little way. The type of girl I could be friends with.

An easy listen

Don't expect to hear too many intimate details or fun stories about other celebs. Compared to others I've listened to Anna's story is fairly low key. I enjoyed hearing her voice and would be interested if she chose to narrate other stories.

Thank you for narrating, Anna!

Kendrick's sassy New England charm and relatable sarcasm made this one of the most enjoyable reads of the year. I rather appreciate how real she gets about self doubt, anxiety, and that some of us will never feel like full adults. It's refreshing when famous people get real about being human. She made me spit out my drink... in public. Enjoy!

Performance

Anna’s lead a very interesting life and really knows how to tell the stories in a way that made me want more. Generally with celeb memoirs my favorite parts are about pieces of their work I’m familiar with. Every time I listen to this one she makes me so intrigued by movies I haven’t seen I end up watching it. You get so much more from this having the author read it also.

Very good.

Where does Scrappy Little Nobody rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've listened to quite a few autobiographical audiobooks, mostly from female comedians and comedy writers. I've listened to some that I didn't want to end, and some that were a grind to finish. For some, it is clear that they are not natural writers, and they struggle to establish that open and honest relationship between author and listener that is so important, even if all you are looking for is to be entertained. That said, Anna Kendrick did NOT struggle with this. She's a natural writer. In my opinion, this book ranks up there with Tina Fey's Bossypants. It's entertaining, engaging, and intimate. Very good.

So hilarious I'm pretty sure I peed

Don't listen to this if you intend on eating or drinking during it. Theres a good chance you will choke and die. I was laughing so hard I'm pretty sure I peed a little...well like a bit of a sprinkle...you know a few drops, I'm not a monster. It's sharp, witty, and filled with quirky lovable anecdotes. But still classy, trashy, and completely smart assy. Excuse me while I leave this on repeat for the foreseeable future. This is nothing short of a revelation as is Annas performance reading this book (Grammy squad I'm looking at you). You'll laugh, you'll cry...from laughing.

LOVED! So refreshing and relatable

Anna Kendrick is refreshingly real and relatable! I loved listening to her story, I think it made it that much better, and I would definitely tune in again. Thank you, Anna for reminding me that I'm actually normal in my own weird ways.
