Publisher's summary

Elisabeth Elliot was a young missionary in Ecuador when members of a violent Amazonian tribe savagely speared her husband, Jim, and his four colleagues. Incredibly, prayerfully, Elisabeth took her toddler daughter, snakebite kit, Bible, and journal...and lived in the jungle with the stone-age people who killed her husband. Compelled by her friendship and forgiveness, many came to faith in Jesus. This courageous, no-nonsense Christian went on to write dozens of books, host a long-running radio show, and speak at conferences all over the world. She was a pillar of coherent, committed faith; a beloved and sometimes controversial icon.

In this authorized biography, Becoming Elisabeth Elliot, best-selling author Ellen Vaughn uses Elisabeth’s private, unpublished journals, and candid interviews with her family and friends, to paint the adventures and misadventures God used to shape one of the most influential women in modern church history. It’s the story of a hilarious, sensual, brilliant, witty, self-deprecating, sensitive, radical, and surprisingly relatable person utterly submitted to doing God’s will, no matter how high the cost.

For Elisabeth, the central question was not, “How does this make me feel?” but, simply, “Is this true?” If so, then the next question was, “What do I need to do about it to obey God?”

“My life is on Thy Altar, Lord - for Thee to consume. Set the fire, Father! Bind me with cords of love to the Altar. Hold me there. Let me remember the Cross.” (Elisabeth Elliot, age 21)

Refreshingly honest

It is so refreshing to listen to an honest rendition of a life story instead of a pedestal placing accounting. The coming of age, relationship, and career struggles were engrossing. It was overall a very encouraging book as it reminded me that I don’t have to be perfect or famous to be loved and used by God. The narrator’s ability to convey emotion made me feel like I was in the room with Elizabeth while she was telling me about her day or listening to her say the words as she was writing them in her diary. Will seek out both the author and narrator in the future.

Narrator is a bit too saccharine

I really loved this biography, but I hope Volume 2 has a different narrator. I don’t think this narrator understood the tone that was needed.

I came to tackle this new work without any thought of how it could change me for the better and grateful that it has. Thank you, Ellen!

A life lived dedicated to the call of Christ.

I liked the voice over and enjoyed the annotation on her voice.
I loved that the life in the jungle was real and it was not made look pretty or easy. Elizabeth devotion to the Lord and obedience to his voice stood out.
And the shear strength that she got to keep staying in the jungle while alone showed her to be someone that never gave up. Which most of us lack in today even the missionaries and cross-cultural workers.
This biography is full and rich and I will listen to it again to glean from the nuggets of her life lessons and suffering as a single mother and woman.
Thank you.

Very Thought Provoking

Shabshab's narration was a distraction at times, but not enough to limit the value of the book. Vaughn' did a great job of conveying Elizabeth's evolution as a person and more importantly in her faith. It's interesting how self-serving she and Jim look to have been and a good reminder for us all...her processing of these events and decisions was so powerful and one of the best interpretations of "why" ever. Much to be learned here.

A Woman Every Christian Should Know

This was an amazing read and gives you a glimpse into who the real Elizabeth was. Her story of patience, perseverance, suffering, and being the hands and feet of God will make you think deeper of your own life. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to get a clearer understanding of Elizabeth and a deeper understanding of what true obedience to Christ looks like.
