Publisher's summary

An international best seller, a number one New York Times best seller, and now a major motion picture! Ruta Sepetys' Between Shades of Gray is now the film Ashes in the Snow!

"Few books are beautifully written, fewer still are important; this novel is both." (The Washington Post)

Fifteen-year-old Lina is a Lithuanian girl living an ordinary life - until Soviet officers invade her home and tear her family apart. Separated from her father and forced onto a crowded train, Lina, her mother, and her young brother make their way to a Siberian work camp, where they are forced to fight for their lives. Lina finds solace in her art, documenting these events by drawing. Risking everything, she embeds clues in her drawings of their location and secretly passes them along, hoping her drawings will make their way to her father's prison camp. But will strength, love, and hope be enough for Lina and her family to survive?

A moving and haunting novel perfect for fans of The Book Thief.

"Superlative. A hefty emotional punch." (The New York Times Book Review)

"Heart-wrenching...an eye-opening reimagination of a very real tragedy written with grace and heart." (The Los Angeles Times)

"At once a suspenseful, drama-packed survival story, a romance, and an intricately researched work of historical fiction." (The Wall Street Journal)

"Beautifully written and deeply felt.... An important book that deserves the widest possible readership." (Booklist, starred review)

Great subject

I was excited about this book. Super interesting subject but the narration was really lacking. I still loved the story.

this needs to be taught in schools

I'm a 26 year old I was taught about Hitler about the horrific things he did but I never in my life thought that there was more...

A People of Courage

Such a heartbreaking story, but so true and a must read for everyone, so we do not forget, and that some may learn for the first time

War Strength and Stamina

Excellent book, story, performance ~ overall outstanding. Living through WWll. Perseverance, love, heartache. This book written by Ruta Sepetys and narrated by Emily Klein was a book that all should read. It should be offered in schools and universities. Much research was done for this book telling true stories of people who lived and survived it and those many who didn't. We all should know of this tragedy that took place ~ to know it was true and be grateful, very grateful for the land of freedom we live in.

Something I never knew

The idea that we don’t appreciate our freedoms until we lose them is frightening in the world we are in today. I learned about something that I didn’t know before listening to this book. Hoping that history won’t repeat itself. Well done book.

Captivating story

Amazing story telling from the author and performer. I couldn’t stop listening. This is historical fiction, but not a lot is known about the history that the author depicts. She tells it in a way that makes you fall in love with her characters, weep with their struggles, and want to root for their survival. I felt like a fly on the wall of history… highly recommend!
