Fight, survive, adapt, and rely only on yourself. That is Derek’s creed and what's got him through the System Integration on Earth. Everything changed when the System came. Cute bunnies and beautiful butterflies became savage killing machines. Then the Invaders arrived with a single goal: to obtain ownership of this new habitable planet. War has raged ever since. None of this mattered much to Derek, aside from making living a little more perilous.

Every year, the empire administers the rite of passage into adulthood. That rite serves to identify those blessed by Aether to become magi. The new magi are shipped to the academy to learn the arts of magic. The academy is a dangerous place; the tournaments held twice each year can cripple or kill the students, and the clans of the empire will go to great lengths to recruit the students they want. Gregory had one dream: to become a magi like the legends of old. Though he was ridiculed by the residents of the village and his unsupportive father, he never wavered from his dream.

Publisher's summary
The enemy has been discovered, the battle lines have been drawn, and the world will never be the same.
A major battle in downtown Hamburg has seen the metropolis practically leveled, demonstrating in the worst possible way how much power individuals can hold, and the world is reeling from the shock. But more members of the cult responsible for the catastrophe are still out there, and Isaac has resolved to hunt them all down, even if each attempt may unleash a fresh wave of violent calamity.
And the political responses to the situation are predictably counterproductive: ineffective regulation that lets real monsters grow in strength while strangling efforts to save the world.
Can Isaac fight against the whole world, working around the old order he’s trying to save while beating the cataclysm the [System] has brought with it—or will he be forced to watch humanity end for a second time?

Despite being a young master of the Zearthorn sect, Neave is not a cultivator. And if he can have his way, he never will be. Years of daily beatings, bullying, and abuse haven’t been enough to make him change his mind, and the ultimatum from his father won’t be either. Forced to choose between an arranged marriage and a path of cultivation, Neave makes a third choice. In a desperate, last-ditch attempt, he enters a secret vault and encounters a treasure. The Revelation: A name given to an event that, five years ago, changed the world forever. In a single day, humanity discovered that not only were they not alone, but they were not exactly at the top of the food chain. Living in the shadows for millennia, supernaturals now had no choice but to finally come into the light. Because of the fury of a mad god, humans and supernaturals now had to learn to coexist side by side for the first time in living memory. With the revelation that magic was not only real but far more common than fairy tales led them to believe, a new society had to be born.

Jonathan Heights saw sunlight once. He must see it again. At least, that’s what he claims when he charters an expedition east beyond the bounds of civilization. The Illuminated King has an abiding interest in such legends, while the Reflected Council is more interested in the treasures that they are convinced he has found, out there in the dark. The truth is shrouded and motives uncertain as Jonathan and the agents of both Crown and underworld take the airship Endeavor to the strange and exotic lands out there in the darkness.

Story
Life’s tough when you’re trapped in an eight-year-old body on another world. His name is Eight. Not really, but that’s what the System decided after a slip of the tongue. One moment, he was stepping out the office door on the way home, and the next waking up on a hillside below a town wall. Oh, and the gate guard drove him off, because he thought Eight was a monster. What’s a boy to do in a world full of magic and so many, many hungry creatures searching for their next meal? Well, there’s an old man inside that body, and he'll use everything he’s learned to survive.

I like the amount of progress that the MC made. I am glad he is becoming one of the strongest people on Earth. I didn’t really care for the whole political plot. It is realistic, I just don’t like politics. I’m already excited for the next book. The narration was really good.

Still good
The narrator does a great job, I feel his telling of the story, and his use of various voices, is superb, the only issue I can pull from his performance, is his stern introduction to each chapter, but, the overall performance is wonderful.
Honestly, the story, is great, and the few worries that I had that the story would Peter out or diminish when certain story elements are no longer applicable, I’m glad to say, were unfounded. This book shows a lot of growth for the main character and progresses the story without feeling tedious.
I look forward to the next book.
