Publisher's summary

The international best seller

"Malby-Anthony offers a book of great inspiration and wide appeal to nature-loving readers." (Publishers Weekly)

A heart-warming sequel to the international best seller The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony's wife Françoise Malby-Anthony.

A chic Parisienne, Françoise never expected to find herself living on a South African game reserve. But then, she fell in love with conservationist Lawrence Anthony, and everything changed. After Lawrence’s death, Françoise faced the daunting responsibility of running Thula Thula without him. Poachers attacked their rhinos, their security team wouldn’t take orders from a woman, and the authorities were threatening to cull their beloved elephant family. On top of that, the herd’s feisty new matriarch, Frankie, didn’t like her.

In this heart-warming and moving audiobook, Françoise describes how she fought to protect the herd and to make her dream of building a wildlife rescue center a reality. She found herself caring for a lost baby elephant who turned up at her house and offering refuge to traumatized orphaned rhinos and a hippo called Charlie who was scared of water. As she learned to trust herself, she discovered she’d had Frankie wrong all along.

Filled with extraordinary animals and the humans who dedicate their lives to saving them, An Elephant in My Kitchen is a captivating and gripping listen.

Wonderful, but not for the faint of heart.

Being an elephant lover, I loved her husband’s book. I read it when it first came out and then recently listened to it here. Françoise covers their fight with the poachers in far more detail than Lawrence did and it was quite hard to listen to. I had to pause and come back several times. However, I loved her hearing about the story behind Thula Thula from her perspective and I greatly admire that she chose to stay and keep his mission and memory alive.

Such an amazing story!!

I highly recommend this book. Just like the first one from Lawrence, this book captures the essence of life in the bush, and conservation efforts for the beautiful animals of Africa. I cannot wait to visit Thula Thula and see all of these things that I have read about. This book will make you laugh, cry, and feel horrible anger over what terrible things that humans can do to the beautiful creatures of our world.

A lovely listen

Educational, romantic, sweet and enjoyable. Heartbreaking, also, and a great book that to me tells how animals break human hearts open.

A beautiful example of human kindness

Although there are parts of this book that are excruciating to hear and learn about the savagery and cruelty of man, the wins and the good far outweighs it. It’s important to understand the successes of great effort , long standing and continuous today are paying off. Great narration as well.

Incredible portrayal of relationships

I loved hearing the other side of Tula Tula from her perspective and how resilient she was following loss. She was able provide the emotional portrayal of relationships between both the community and the animals they cared for. An incredible woman and story of relationships and resilience.

Excellent, heartbreaking, and inspirational

I was very intrigued to read this book after I had read “The Elephant Whisperer” which was written by this author’s husband. After Lawrence Anthony, Francoise Anthony’s husband died, Francoise became the owner of Thula Thula. Francoise and Lawrence built Thula Thula from very humble beginnings. Over the years, Francoise was determined to keep Thula Thula open in spite of the many obstacles set before her. I love the way Francoise continued to press forward with the dream she and Lawrence had shared. A stunning story of animal survival even though being brutally hunted and treated by humans. A wonderful book to read!
