Critic reviews

This 1769 edition is highly sought after due to being more reader/listener friendly than the 1611 since many typos were fixed.... At its core is a dead zone, devoid of life, where government agencies crash their obsolete satellites and space stations, confident they won't harm a soul. When the International Space Station suffers a catastrophic failure and plummets through the atmosphere, it's here that Mission Specialist Julie Rohr, an astrobiologist studying living space dust called xylem, finds herself marooned. Brilliant
I listened first the narration in American English and then this German translation popped up in recommended list. The German narration much better because it was distracting to have the characters thoughts and spoken lines all narrated with an American accent. Here's my review of English version:
'Devastating and ultimately cathartic and healing:
It's takes a few chapters to acclimate to the choppy out of chronological sequence telling of this war time story through the eyes of mostly two characters, one German boy and one French girl, but well worth sticking with the whole story. The narration is a distraction cuz is told mostly with an American accent regardless of actual character thinking or speaking. Would be much better if characters spoke with believable accent true to their languages. Themes: How horrible war is for all who live through its devastation and the lost potential of those who did not survive the war. And how the courage to choose justice over laws and orders can save souls and lives that stretch into the future of humanity.'
