Publisher's summary

For fans of The War That Saved My Life and other World War II fiction, A Place to Hang the Moon is the tale of three orphaned siblings who are evacuated from London to live in the countryside with the secret hope of finding a permanent family.

It is 1940 and William, 12, Edmund, 11, and Anna, nine, aren't terribly upset by the death of the not-so-grandmotherly grandmother who has taken care of them since their parents died. But the children do need a guardian, and in the dark days of World War II London, those are in short supply, especially if they hope to stay together. Could the mass wartime evacuation of children from London to the countryside be the answer?

It's a preposterous plan, but off they go - keeping their predicament a secret, and hoping to be placed in a temporary home that ends up lasting forever. Moving from one billet to another, the children suffer the cruel trickery of foster brothers, the cold realities of outdoor toilets, and the hollowness of empty stomachs. They find comfort in the village lending library, whose kind librarian, Nora Müller, seems an excellent choice of billet, except that her German husband's whereabouts are currently unknown, and some of the villagers consider her unsuitable.

Outstanding narrator and excellent story.

Enjoyed this story very much and I'm sure part of that was the excellent narration.

I highly recommend this book. I listened to this book straight through the night. I chose completing the book over a good nights sleep.

Sweet story

A place to hang the moon is a sweet story about orphan siblings finding a home during WWII. Ch 13 has a scene that is hard for some folks not familiar with farm life, but it's nothing too bad or gory. Recommended for ages 9 and up, depending on the child, maybe 11 and up for sensitive children.

A sweet, story of hope

I enjoyed every minute of this book, even the sad and angry places. The word pictures and the narrator's voice were perfect. Three children, orphaned during World War II were evacuated from London to the country to keep them safe from the bombing. They hopesmd - they needed - to find a "forever family" who would eventually adopt them. It was a "perposterate plan" because they were advised by the solisitor in London to tell no one about their state (a lot of money would be theirs one day). So the three went from billet to billet, enduring nastiness and mistreatments until.... until the perposterate plan took shape in their situation. A truly feel-good story.
