Publisher's summary

For fans of best-selling WWII fiction comes a powerful novel from Lynn Austin about three women whose lives are instantly changed when the Nazis invade the neutral Netherlands, forcing each into a complicated dance of choice and consequence.

Lena is a wife and mother who farms alongside her husband in the tranquil countryside. Her faith has always been her compass, but can she remain steadfast when the questions grow increasingly complex and the answers could mean the difference between life and death?

Lena’s daughter, Ans, has recently moved to the bustling city of Leiden, filled with romantic notions of a new job and a young Dutch police officer. But when she is drawn into Resistance work, her idealism collides with the dangerous reality that comes with fighting the enemy.

Miriam is a young Jewish violinist who immigrated for the safety she thought Holland would offer. She finds love in her new country, but as her family settles in Leiden, the events that follow will test them in ways she could never have imagined.

The Nazi invasion propels these women onto paths that cross in unexpected, sometimes-heartbreaking ways. Yet the story that unfolds illuminates the surprising endurance of the human spirit and the power of faith and love to carry us through.

Great Story!

I really enjoyed this story and the characters, once I kept them all straight. I didn't mind at all the religious references and thought them inspiring at times of fear. This is my second listen of Austin books and I will be sure to read another WW2 one by her.

Great historic novel

This was a great story following the lives of four women during WWII. Lynn Austin did a great job of depicting the emotions, fears, concerns and worries of these four women all with different problems. Highly recommend if you enjoy this period or unrest in Europe during the early 1940s

Our Dutch Heritage…

My father in law was asked to find food and feed between 60 to 100 people during the hunger winter in Amsterdam. He was involved with the Resistance. I lived in Holland for two years and have traveled there more than a dozen times gathering stories and information about WWII there. I can verify that the research in this book is accurate and well presented. I enjoyed this book and recommend it and encourage others to read it that we will know and remember so we do not repeat it.

One of the best books I’ve read, ever!

The story lines, characters, historical pictures that unfolded all lent to this captivating read. I highly recommend to those of you who are fascinated with those who suffered through WW2 in Europe.

Praise God!

As in the story, we don’t know why God allows so much suffering, but we learn to trust Him. His ways are higher than ours.

Immersive!

What a wonderful book, even though it's about such an unspeakable time in history. I felt like the characters were MY friends and I was living this with them. Faith in God is hard sometimes and this book doesn't skirt around that issue.

The narration was excellent, too!

I recommend this book 100%!

The truth about war

What a beautiful story that intertwines such tragic history with devotion to family, growing in faith in God, and the various ways we as God’s people respond to the needs of others. I couldn’t wait to find out what each character does next.
