Wonderfuly written and narrated

A terrific story and a great narrator. A book that all should read though a novel has a deep meaning and story to tell

Wonderful story horrified at the ignorance of my four Bears I’m older than lovely. I wish I had the words to express my feelings. Beautiful story.

good story so so narration

Not his usual fare but a good story. I like Whoopi Goldberg but thought her narration was lacking. I think Xe Sands would have been a better choice.

Score evened!

Well told story, made excellent by the reader! As we are reminded African Natives were brutally captured, whipped, beaten, raped, tortured and then shipped like animals to slavery. Hooray for the Dead Island!! So many valid points made. Lovely's long memory and grudges are understandable, her mistrust well placed. Only one loose end...a non profit and board members who are not aware of taxes...could there be another story?

Oh, Whoopi, stick to acting!

Such a disappointment. I'm only an hour or so into this book, and I'm not sure I'll make it through. I love Grisham as a writer and Whoopi as an actor, and I was really excited to listen to this book--I even pre-ordered it. But it is a serious struggle to get past Whoopi's narration enough to appreciate the story. It has become very clear to me that a great actor doesn't necessarily equal a great reader. Regardless, I'll try to hold out longer and continue listening (at 1.2 speed, which is needed) to see if the story eventually compensates for the narration. I'm just sorry I didn't wait to read the reviews; had I done so, I would have at least known what to expect. Sorry, Whoopi. Grisham, next time please do better.

Up to Grisham standards it

It was hard at first getting used to Whopie’s familiar voice, but she did a professional job of narration and soon I forgot. Story was fascinating but too long

Fabulous & Touching

Whoopi does a great job with the narration. I typically cannot listen to female narrators, but listening to her was a pleasure. Great book. Couldn’t stop listening, kind of sad it’s over.

Justice for too many inhumanities created & endured!!

I really enjoyed listening to this story!! It was involved, and well done! I think Whoopie is an excellent narrator! The Author has once again contributed a masterful tale!

Too much narration

Usually love his books but this one gets too technical with too much narration and not enough interaction with characters. Very slow… not up to his usual work.
Do NOT like narrator.

A wonderful story with excellent narration

I found this to be a wonderful listen. I literally could not put it down. Whoopi Goldberg does an amazing job with the narration. I felt like my mother was reading it to me. another great story from John Grisham. I highly recommend it.
